When a child faces abuse or neglect, they often turn to excelling in school as a way to cope. Achieving success there, makes them feel acknowledged and valued.⁣ ⁣ This child grows into an adult where this pattern continues into their professional life. You become driven by the need for positive feedback, striving to excel in your work.⁣ ⁣ During tough times, you may throw yourself into work, working long hours in search of recognition. ⁣ ⁣ While there’s plenty of external positive reinforcement for achievement, on the inside, you may feel like a fraud.⁣ ⁣ And more often high-achievers often fall a prey to procrastination because of your high expectations. parents withholding praise & love can reinforce the belief that we have to earn love, that we have to prove we’re good enough or worthy enough, that only certain “wins” can be celebrated. i’ve been there: going above and beyond in every aspect to meet their ever-changing expectations until I eventually burned out and had a breakdown in my doctors office because I was overwhelmed, burned out, depressed. (that’s a WHOLE story 😆) In the secret therapy sessions that followed, I came face-to-face with the voices and narratives that were on repeat from my parents that I had internalized: ❌“you haven’t earned rest.” ❌“so much wasted potential.” ❌“you could’ve been so much better.” ❌“you need to do MORE” ❌“you haven’t done anything worth anyone being proud of” and honestly, constantly trying to DO more and BE more was exhausting. growing up, all I ever wanted to hear was that my parents were proud of me instead of feeling like a burden for just existing. but now, through meeting myself where I am, being intentional with the things I do and who I surround myself with, and cultivating oodles of self compassion i’m able to be wholeheartedly proud of myself and celebrate ALL of the wins🎉🎉🎉 🎊Got out of bed? A win. 🎊Drinking water? A win. 🎊Getting that job? A win. 🎊Getting that apartment? Also a win. ‼️Here’s your reminder that you’re allowed to celebrate you, your journey, and what’s ahead. 🌻Want someone (or a bunch of someones) to celebrate how far you’ve come and cheer you on on your way to where you want to be? The hardest lesson I ever learnt was that my worth isn’t tied to my the level of my achievements. I was conditioned to believe that I was worthy only when I was achieving in life. This led me to constantly hustle, work, push and end up drained and burnt out in the process. Slowing down helped me find who I am again. Breathing into my goals instead of running behind them helped me get to them faster. I stopped seeking validation from them and started seeking validation from myself, and in my moments of nothingness, i begin to believe that I was enough. Slow down, you’re doing fine. Self-compassion says: I trust myself to get through these feelings of unworthiness, of imposter syndrome, of self-comparison. We ALL struggle with critical self talk, feeling not good enough, and wondering what the heck we are even doing here! So stop trying to fight these feelings… stop getting down on yourself for having them. It’s easy to get caught up in the belief that your value as a person is solely determined by how much you accomplish, but that couldn’t be further from the truth. You are so much more than the tasks you complete or the goals you achieve. Your worth lies in your unique qualities, your kindness, your compassion, and the love you share with others. Remember, life is not a race to constantly outdo yourself. It’s about finding balance, taking care of yourself, and nurturing your well-being. Your mental and emotional health are just as important as any project or deadline. Don’t let the pressure to constantly produce overshadow your own happiness and peace of mind. ✨Remember that it’s okay to rest, to take breaks, and to prioritize self-care.
