IT’S A PANGOPUP! 🥹 Haven’t been out much over the past two months, but we picked the driest and earliest night to search for reed snakes and ended up finding this instead! We only got to spend just a minute with this mama pangolin and her pup before she quietly made her way off the road and disappeared into the forest. Only 3 videos, no photos, and nothing else 🥲 Pangolins are extremely uncommon in Singapore mainly due to habitat loss and road accidents. Urban development has reduced their forest habitats, and fragmented areas increase their risk of being hit by vehicles especially during the night. While it is not a huge issue within Singapore today, pangolins have historically been hunted for their scales and meat, especially in other parts of Southeast Asia. Singapore’s position as a transit hub also made it a pathway for the illegal pangolin trade, although local enforcement has gotten stricter in recent years. What a great sighting to remember. #wildlife #pangolin

These armor-clad insectivores are often called “forest guardians.” This is because just one pangolin can eat enough ants and termites to help protect more than 40 acres of land from destruction. Plus, as they dig for shelter or food, they aerate and enrich the soil, supporting healthy plant life. 🌱 Despite their vital role, pangolins are the most trafficked wild mammals in the world. More than 200,000 are poached each year. WildAid works with partners across Asia and Africa to strengthen enforcement of laws protecting pangolins and shift consumer behavior to reduce consumer demand for their scales and meat. What happens after a pangolin is rescued from illegal activities or the illegal wildlife trade ? If a pangolin is lucky to be found or seized by law enforcement it then begins its journey back to the wild. A journey that requires a monumental amount of hours from a dedicated team of rehabbers, researchers and rangers both during rehabilitation and post rehabilitation for continued monitoring. Animals will arrive with Injury, illness and stress related conditions of being captured and held by poachers. Like any animals coming into rehabilitation vital veterinary checks are processes are assessed as soon as possible. There is one goal and one goal only and that is return to the wild but welfare for the pangolin is top priority. The process is incredibly complex for not all but many of the animals that arrive. Some stay for months others are released in days after a clear assessment of health. It is often less stressful to return as soon as possible (stress is also a killer) but medical illness and I jury doesn't always allow that Mag'gau is just one example of a pangolins rehab because every one can be so different. Requiring regular tube feeding by a veterinarian after weakness and a case of pneumonia .Long days and nights are walked by the dedicated team searching for ants and termites to encourage natural feeding behaviours and building strength for release when rain arrives. In the days the teams search for new areas of ant activity,at night the pangolins join for feeding (being nocturnal).This comes with challenges. The terrain can be rough and tricky and pangolins can be fast when experiencing stress making it difficult to navigate . Being aware of other wildlife also plays a huge factor. It eventually gets easier and you begin to see those signs of them making it back to the wild. Conditions for releases have to also be right. Finding a territory for a pangolin along with weather pressures can make the process less simple than it seems. Often it is an overlooked process of the energy required to get one animal back to the wild Not every pangolin is this lucky to have a chance out of the illegal trade but every single one counts @pangolincrf
