The invisible load, the stuff no one sees but every mum feels. Being the default parent isn’t just doing the things. It’s remembering the things. The nappies, the snacks, the nursery days, the appointments, the extra socks in the bag “just in case.” It’s carrying the constant mental to do list in your head while everyone else just… lives. If this resonates let me know in the comments below what i’ve missed 🤣 P.S. before anyone comes at me, I love being a mum and my partner is amazing this is just a little “default parent” light hearted humour my loves 🫶

For a long time, I was the default parent. Not because my husband is a bad guy. Not because my kids are incapable. But because everything lived in my head. The remembering. The anticipating. The following up. The emotional temperature check. I wasn’t just doing tasks. I was tracking the entire house. Here are 5 habits that shifted me from default parent → supported parent: 1️⃣ I stopped asking for help and started defining ownership. “Can you help with dinner?” became “You own dinner on Tuesdays — full loop.” 2️⃣ I defined what “done” actually means. No more vague expectations. No more half-finished tasks. 3️⃣ I stopped rescuing when it wasn’t perfect. Refine the system. Don’t reclaim the task. 4️⃣ I made responsibilities visible. If it only lives in your head, you still own it. 5️⃣ I let natural consequences teach — not my frustration. If a task slips, the system adjusts. I don’t absorb it. Becoming a supported parent wasn’t about doing less. It was about carrying less alone. And that shift changed everything — my tone, my patience, my marriage. If you’re tired of being the default parent but don’t know where to start, Off Mute walks you through this step by step. Comment OFF MUTE and I’ll send you the framework. 🔇💛

Parent burnout is real—it’s the exhaustion you feel when you’re giving everything and still feel like it’s not enough. It’s okay to pause, to ask for help, and to remind yourself that you matter too. #parenthood #thatsdarlingmotherhood #realmotherhood #postpartum #motherload #youareenough #youarenotalone #itsokaynottobeokay #motherssupportingmothers #parentalk

I think am not the only one 😅 honestly solo parenting reminds you just how much of yourself you pour into your kids. It’s beautiful, but it’s also draining. In Hunt, Gather, Parent, Michaeleen Doucleff shares how many traditional communities approach sleep with flexibility rather than strict schedules. She reminds us that when kids resist bedtime, they’re not being difficult, they’re often responding to the pressure we don’t even realize we’re creating. When bedtime turns into a race against the clock, children can feel rushed and disconnected from their own natural rhythm. So what can you do instead? ✨ Set the scene: Instead of announcing “BEDTIME IS NOW,” you start dimming the lights, putting on soft music, and switching to quieter play. The whole house gets calmer. ✨ Follow their cues: Instead of a clock, try to notice your child slowing down, rubbing their eyes, or seeking more cuddles.  ✨ Go with the flow: Sleeping a little earlier or later is okay, just trust their body’s rhythm. ✨ Make it predictable: Brushing teeth, picking pajamas, choosing a book. When the routine stays the same, kids gradually take ownership. Bedtime becomes something they do, not something done to them. 🚨 Remember that supporting their natural circadian rhythm takes patience. Progress can be slow and messy. Their age, stage, and temperament all play a part. One resource for bedtime is the floor bed, which can allow children to get in and out of bed as they respond to their body’s natural rhythm.  Comment “INDEPENDENT” for the link! Therapy may be helpful for uncovering painful past experiences and these experiences may be even more distressing when they were caused by a neglectful or abusive parent 😢 Many people are tempted to seek closure by confronting the parent however they end up getting invalidated and gaslighted instead. 😫🥺 Group or peer therapy may be helpful as you may get the validation that you seek from peers who have survived similar abuse, especially when it is unlikely that the abusive parents will ever give the validation that you seek. #narcissisticparents #childhoodtrama #trauma Disclaimer: You may want to consider your individual mental health needs with a licensed medical professional.
