The power of perspective…realizing that the “hard” you’re navigating now is the exact opportunity you once dreamed of. Analyzing, writing, and publishing the conservation research I always hoped to do is mentally exhausting - a lot of coding, reading, writing, and of course plenty of imposter syndrome. But this perspective reminds me that growth rarely feels comfortable. For anyone in this season, a reminder that you are not behind, you’re stepping into who you’re meant to become. ✨🌱 #marinebiologist #phdstudent #scientist #phdlife #marinescience

Engineering school = no sleep, no money, no social life. Just coffee, deadlines, and pure survival mode for many years ☕📚 Yes it is true, engineering school is tough! You study all day and night and on top of that many students need to work to cover their expenses, live on one meal, and question their life choices every week. But it i VERY IMPORTANT THAT YOU FINISH THAT DEGREE… Your life will change 180 degree after that! Good salary. Stability. Freedom. Remote work. Opportunities worldwide. 🌍 I promise you all those exhausting years are so worth it in the end! Keep going 💪 📌Share with a friend in engineering and motivate them to finish that engineering degree! #engineering #electricalengineer #researcher #phdstudent

These past few days, we’ve been unpacking that feeling of “not being smart enough” for a PhD and it has made me realize this is something we rarely talk about 😶 But here’s the twist : a lot of PhD students weren’t top students during uni. PhD “vacation” isn’t really a vacation—it’s just doing the same research and writing, but from a different location 🧳💻. The guilt of not working follows you everywhere, so instead of resting, you’re editing drafts on the beach 😩 Tag a PhD student who can relate Struggling to catch up on your research even during “breaks”? My dream of studying abroad for my PhD was crushed when I lost my father during my master’s program. At that time, I had already started preparing for the GRE. I was researching universities and planning to take the TOEFL as well. But realistically, studying abroad during such a difficult moment for my family would have been an unreasonable decision. I even tried applying for a fellowship during COVID, but I was rejected. Very few applications were accepted at that time given the circumstances. I was studying at one of the best universities in Japan (my home country), but I often heard people say that if you want to become a well-known scholar, you need to get your PhD from a globally recognized university. Indeed, many of the scholars I admire studied abroad in the US or UK during their graduate programs. I noticed how advanced they seemed, not only because of language skills, but also because of the diversity of experiences they gained by living abroad. I wanted that exposure too. It took me a while to accept that just because I didn’t go abroad for my PhD didn’t mean I had failed. I grew tremendously during my graduate program in Japan, and I don’t regret staying at a time when my family needed me the most. Sometimes we get trapped in the “what if.” And when we do, we forget that we are living our life right now. If we keep focusing on what could have been, we may never fully experience what is actually happening. I don’t know who needs to hear this, but if you’re wondering whether to pursue a PhD just because it’s not abroad, don’t dismiss the opportunity. Even if it’s a PhD in your home country, take it. Why not? You never know what experiences and opportunities you will encounter there. And if you truly believe you need to go abroad—maybe to collect data, collaborate, or learn from a specific professor—you can still pursue those opportunities during your PhD. I promise you, it will not be a waste of time. #tokyolife #phdstudent #graduateschool #phdlife #academics

💪🏼I’ve passed my PhD viva with no corrections and wanted to share some tips that helped me achieve this milestone! 1️⃣ Practice / Mock viva: Rehearse your presentation and prepare for potential questions that your examiners might ask. Use your supervisors and peers as sounding boards for feedback and critique. 2️⃣ Know your thesis inside and out: You should be able to articulate your research clearly and concisely. Make sure you’re familiar with the content and structure of your thesis and can explain it in simple terms. 3️⃣ Familiarize yourself with the format of the viva: Understand the structure of the examination, including the roles of the examiners, the timing of the examination, and the types of questions that might be asked. 4️⃣ Be confident and assertive: You’ve done the research and written the thesis, so be confident in your knowledge and expertise. Don’t be afraid to defend your research or challenge the examiners’ questions. 5️⃣ Stay focused and engaged: Listen carefully to the examiners’ questions and be present in the moment. Take notes if needed and don’t be afraid to ask for clarification if you don’t understand a question. 🌙 The night before the viva, make sure to get a good night’s sleep and eat a healthy meal. Review your notes and practice your presentation one more time, but try to avoid studying anything new or making major changes to your thesis. 👩‍🎓 Remember, passing your viva with no corrections is a great achievement, and it shows that your thesis met the high standards of your examiners. But it’s important to approach the examination with a growth mindset. Be open to feedback and use it as an opportunity to improve your research and academic skills. And don’t forget to ENJOY YOUR VIVA! Good luck to the all PhD candidates out there 🤞 #PhD #PhDlife #PhDstudent #Doctorate #HigherEducation #Academia #Research #Science #University #UKPhD #PhDviva #NoCorrections #Tips #Advice #StudyTips #growthmindset

Telling you general career tracks after a PhD at 1.2x speed so you get the most value 🤩 Don’t waste your time like I did entering a PhD for all the wrong reasons. I probably should have gone to art school instead (lol), but I chased a PhD to not feel like a failure after med school rejections. Take a gap year if you need and figure yourself out before you invest 5-8 years working on something that you despise. After graduation, people will clap for you, but you’ll be at square one if you didn’t think ahead enough. These of course aren’t all the opportunities that come after a PhD, but mostly what people aim for. I mean, I found an interesting niche in science illustration for journal covers, so there still are interesting ways to pave a path forward with a PhD. Share this with a friend if they’re thinking about a PhD. Ask your questions in the comments, would love to help you out! #phd #gradschool #academia #stem #phdstudent
