_ETRAPPIST 1 system 👽
The TRAPPIST-1 star system is a captivating celestial arrangement located approximately 39 light-years away in the Aquarius constellation. Discovered in 2016, it consists of a small, ultracool dwarf star named TRAPPIST-1, which is only slightly larger than Jupiter. What makes this system particularly intriguing is the presence of seven Earth-sized planets orbiting closely around this diminutive star, resembling a miniature version of our own solar system.
Among these seven exoplanets, TRAPPIST-1e, TRAPPIST-1f, and TRAPPIST-1g hold special significance due to their positioning within the habitable zone of the star. This habitable zone, also known as the Goldilocks zone, refers to the region around the star where conditions might be just right for the existence of liquid water—a key ingredient for life as we know it.
TRAPPIST-1e, the innermost of the three, is approximately the size of Earth and completes an orbit around its host star in just 6.1 days. Despite its proximity to the star, the potential for habitability exists due to the dwarf star's lower luminosity, resulting in a milder climate than one might expect. Researchers speculate about the presence of an atmosphere on TRAPPIST-1e, and further studies aim to unravel its composition and characteristics.
Moving outward, TRAPPIST-1f and TRAPPIST-1g also orbit within the habitable zone. TRAPPIST-1f, slightly larger than Earth, completes an orbit in around 9.2 days, while TRAPPIST-1g, on the outer edge of the habitable zone, takes approximately 12.4 days for a full orbit. The intriguing aspect of these planets lies in their potential for hosting liquid water, opening up the tantalizing possibility of supporting life.
