GRNayib Bukele highlights that despite tax rates being higher than in many countries, taxes aren’t the true source of government funding. The real engine is treasury bonds, largely purchased by the Federal Reserve with newly printed money.
This creates a cycle: bonds fund spending, the Fed buys bonds, and more money enters circulation. It’s essentially paper backed by paper, making the system fragile and debt-driven. In 2023 alone, U.S. debt surpassed $33 trillion, fueled by this loop.
Taxes, then, serve more to maintain the illusion of solvency than to cover expenses. The reality is a system sustained by endless money printing—an approach history shows can only stretch so far before breaking.
