A scrub oak habitat was recently set ablaze on State Game Lands 33, in Centre County, by one of the Pennsylvania Game Commission’s highly trained prescribed fire crews. 467 acres were burned to maintain scrub oak pitch pine barrens, oak woodland, and savanna habitats—all of which are incredibly important for a variety of Pennsylvania’s wildlife. A drone was used to perform all interior ignitions, allowing the crew to more safely burn a larger area. The drone was equipped with a sphere ignition device, which drops paintball-like balls that catch on fire 15-30 seconds after hitting the ground. Managing quality wildlife habitats on state game lands is part of our agency’s mission and one of the best ways to ensure healthy wildlife populations for current and future generations. These specialized firefighters 🚒 make a strict and detailed fire plan highly contingent on weather conditions. Starting a prescribed fire to prevent a potentially catastrophic wildfire is done every 4 to 7 years on this land. The renewal helps maintain and restore habitat for the black-capped vireo and the endangered golden-cheeked warbler. The South Puget Sound region is home to one of Washington’s rarest ecosystems: prairies. These dry grasslands and oak woodlands host many of Washington’s most imperiled wildlife species. Once common in the South Puget Sound, only 3% of this region’s prairies remain. Many of the region’s remaining prairies are managed within WDFW’s Scatter Creek Wildlife Area complex, which also includes prairies that WDFW is restoring. A recent addition to Scatter Creek complex is the Violet Prairie unit, which covers 1,485 acres in south Thurston County and adds to the protected area of the Scatter Creek watershed. WDFW is working on multiple strategies to help restore and enrich wildlife habitat at Violet Prairie. One of the most effective restoration tools for westside prairies is prescribed fire, but this tool can only be used under certain conditions and at certain times. Having other “tools in the toolbox” helps WDFW continue important habitat restoration work when prescribed fire cannot be used. That’s where conservation grazing comes in: strategically and carefully using cattle grazing to mimic some of the positive ecosystem impacts of fire on the landscape. Conservation grazing can reduce non-native plants, open up grassland spaces, and maintain a diversity of plant structure in the habitat. Under permit from WDFW, the Colvin Ranch in Tenino grazes cattle on the Violet Prairie unit, contributing to ecosystem restoration and habitat conservation. Conservation grazing efforts at Violet Prairie would not be possible without close collaboration with @wsupullman, USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service, @thurston_county, and @colvinranch. WDFW looks forward to continuing to work collaboratively with a variety of partners, including agricultural producers, to help manage landscapes like this across the state. Prescribed fire is often called nature's reset button because it mimics the natural fire cycles that many ecosystems have evolved with and depend on for renewal. These low-intensity fires help reduce excess vegetation, prevent the buildup of fuels that could lead to more severe wildfires, and create open spaces that allow sunlight to reach the ground. A prescribed fire - or prescribed burn - according the the US Forest Service, “refer[s] to the controlled application of fire by a team of fire experts under specified weather conditions to restore health to ecosystems that depend on fire.” (link below) Fire as a method to “restore health to ecosystems” might sound counterintuitive, but it’s true. So why might a state, federal, or private landowner be interested in doing a prescribed burn? There are a few reasons, according to the US Forest Service: 🔥 Reducing hazardous fuels to reduce the risk of extreme fires to communities and homes 🔥 Minimizing the spread of pests, including insects, as well as disease 🔥 Removing unwanted species that threaten native species 🔥 Improving animal habitats and providing forage for wild game 🔥 Returning nutrients to the soil 🔥 Promoting the healthy growth of native plants and trees Of course, fire is highly unpredictable, so private citizens should NOT attempt to conduct a prescribed burn on their own. Instead, residents should work with their local Tennessee Division of Forestry (TDF) Area Forester to determine whether a prescribed burn could the the right decision for their property, and, if so, submit a request for professional fire management through their Area Forester. On April 14th, Forest Rangers and staff from the DEC’s Divisions of Lands and Forests and Fish and Wildlife conducted a prescribed burn in Jefferson County on more than 37 acres in the Ashland Flats Wildlife Management Area (WMA) in Lyme, NY. The goals of the Ashland Flats WMA prescribed fire are to reduce thatch for grassland birds, encourage warm and cool season grass regeneration, remove parsnip form the field, expose 30% of the mineral soils, and promote native pollinator plants such as milkweed.   Prescribed fire is an important land management tool used to improve habitat for wildlife. These burns are conducted according to law and regulation and require technical expertise to be done safely. Controlled burns help prevent the spread of invasive species, and in some areas, prescribed fire is used to reduce the buildup of thatch, wood, timber litter, and other fuel to reduce the potential for wildfires that threaten public safety and critical infrastructure. DEC carefully and responsibly implements prescribed fires only when conditions are favorable to meet management goals, including while the statewide annual ban on residential brush burning is in effect until May 14th.

It’s burn season… prescribed burns, that is. The Pennsylvania Game Commission uses prescribed fires (or controlled burns) as a management tool to improve wildlife habitat and hunting opportunities by increasing soft mast production, rejuvenating browse plants, and maintaining grasses and broadleaf plants. Depending on the time of the year, you can see new growth within just a few days after the burn has ended. The burned areas promote the growth of warm-season grasses and wildflowers, while also helping to reduce other undesirable vegetation and invasive species. The area soon becomes a “hot spot,” and wildlife, including turkeys, use the newly regenerated areas for food and cover. These fires are planned to burn slowly and include “escape routes” for wildlife. Prescribed fires are only conducted under the right weather conditions by highly trained staff. Over the past two weeks, ODF has partnered with OSU Extension Fire Program, NRCS, Cow Creek Band of Umpqua Tribe of Indians and DFPA to host Certified Burn Manager (CBM) trainings in Roseburg and Sisters with a live prescribed fire exercise in Roseburg following the course. The overall goal of the CBM program is to reduce barriers to prescribed fire in Oregon by increasing available resources on non-federal, ODF-protected lands. When landowners within ODF protection districts use a certified burn manager and follow the required burn plan, it protects both from civil liability.
