March 31, 1968: President Lyndon Johnson announced that he would not seek reelection, surprising the nation and many of his own staff. “With America’s sons in the fields far away, with America’s future under challenge right here at home, with our hopes and the world’s hopes for peace in the balance every day, I do not believe that I should devote an hour or a day of my time to any personal partisan causes or to any duties other than the awesome duties of this office — the Presidency of your country,” he said. “Accordingly, I shall not seek, and I will not accept, the nomination of my party for another term as your President.” Before President Biden’s announcement Sunday, President Johnson was the most recent incumbent president with eligibility remaining not to seek reelection. President Johnson’s approval ratings declined amid public frustration with both the Vietnam War and domestic unrest. The Voting Rights Act, championed by President Johnson, helped our nation find its way forward. It made America more fair, just, and consistent with our founding principles. Nearly 60 years since its passage, we honor that legacy. And remember that our work isn't done.

I’m proud of the State of CA and @CAGovernor for suing the Trump administration over the illegal deployment of the National Guard—violating the 10th Amendment. Federalizing our Guard without state approval is illegal and immoral. The last time a president bypassed a governor to deploy the military on its own soil was in March 1965–when President Johnson deployed Guard troops to protect demonstrators from racist violence at the momentous civil rights march in Selma, Alabama. The Legislature is urging the Ninth Court to reconsider. This fight is about protecting our people, our sovereignty, and our democracy. #StateRights #Sovereignty #EthicalMilitary #CAGuard #FederalOverreach

“”AIPAC should be required to register as a foreign agent. That would effectively shut down the inordinate influence that @AIPAC has on behalf of the state of Israel,”” says Jill Stein. President John F. Kennedy tried to do this in 1960s when he was first elected President. A few months later he was assassinated and President Johnson shut it down. AIPAC has been registered as an American charity since and its power and influence over American politics soared to where it is today - Totally in control of the American political system. @drjillstein #joinjill

LBJ Declared War on Poverty—Vietnam Killed It On January 8, 1964, President Johnson declared "unconditional war on poverty." The Economic Opportunity Act created Head Start, VISTA, Job Corps, and Community Action Programs that gave poor communities—especially Black Americans—unprecedented power to challenge inequality. Poverty dropped from 20% to 11% by 1973. But Vietnam drained the funding. Dr. King said it was "shot down on the battlefields." By the late '70s, the program was dismantled. Yet its legacy survives in programs serving millions today. #WarOnPoverty, #LBJ, #1964, #HeadStart, #CivilRights, #MLK, #EconomicJustice, #BlackHistory, #Vietnam, #GreatSociety, #Poverty, #CommunityAction, #VISTA, #JobCorps, #LyndonJohnson, #SocialJustice, #AmericanHistory, #1960s, #FacebookReelsTrend, #YouTubeShorts, #ViralHistory, #TrueStory, #HistoryMatters,

President Biden is set to deliver his first joint speech to Congress tonight. Did you know a president’s first speech to Congress is not considered to be a State of the Union address? Lyndon Johnson made his first address to Congress on November 27, 1963 days after the assassination of President John F. Kennedy. During this time of national grief, Johnson wanted to unite the nation in action and understanding. President Johnson declared, “The time has come for Americans of all races and creeds and political beliefs to understand and to respect one another. So let us put an end to the teaching and the preaching of hate and evil and violence. Let us turn away from the fanatics of the far left and the far right, from the apostles of bitterness and bigotry, from those defiant of law, and those who pour venom into our Nation’s bloodstream.” . . . #POTUS #President #congress

Happy New Year! A home, a place of business, and the location from which President Johnson often ran the country from 1963-1969, the Texas White House has left an enormous impact on the nation and the world. Today, the Texas White House Complex on the LBJ Ranch is being closed to the public in order to begin our much needed rehabilitation project there. As we look forward to preserving the structures at the complex for future generations, we're taking a moment to reflect on the changes the building has seen in the past. In the first episode of our new series "Heart's Homeland," see Ranger Douglas describe how the Texas White House became the structure we know today. Hint: This isn't the first time the building has needed extensive repairs! Don't forget that much of the LBJ Ranch is still accessible including the Junction School, Reconstructed Birthplace, Showbarn, and more! Beech VC-6A In 1966 the U.S. Air Force purchased a standard Beechcraft King Air B90 with a special VIP interior, designated as the VC-6A, to support President Lyndon B. Johnson and his family. The aircraft was faster and more agile than other light transport aircraft and featured full pressurization for comfort at high altitudes. Other special features included all-weather navigation, de-icing equipment and reversible propellers that allowed the aircraft to land on very short runways. The VC-6A was primarily used to transport President Johnson and his family between Bergstrom AFB, Texas, and the Johnson Ranch near Stonewall, Texas. Owing to these frequent flights, the aircraft became informally known as the “Lady Bird Special,” a play on the childhood nickname “Lady Bird” of First Lady Claudia Johnson. After leaving presidential service, the VC-6A continued to operate as an executive transport with the 89th Military Airlift Wing until it was retired to the museum in September 1985. https://www.nationalmuseum.af.mil/Visit/Museum-Exhibits/Fact-Sheets/Display/Article/195809/beech-vc-6a/
