HIOn June 23, 2002 at Pride 21: Demolition in Japan, fight fans witnessed one of the most brutal and unforgettable battles in MMA history: Don Frye vs. Yoshihiro Takayama.
Just seconds into the fight, Frye and Takayama grabbed each other by the back of the head and began throwing punches no defense, no backing up, just standing toe-to-toe in the center of the ring trading bombs. For nearly 30 seconds straight, neither man stepped away. It looked less like a sport and more like two warriors refusing to fall.
Takayama, known mostly as a pro wrestler before stepping into MMA, showed unbelievable toughness, absorbing heavy shots while firing back with everything he had. Frye, a former UFC champion and PRIDE veteran, matched him punch for punch with his signature grit and iron chin.
The fight lasted just over 6 minutes. Frye eventually secured a takedown and finished Takayama with ground-and-pound, earning the TKO victory. But the result almost didn’t matter both men left the ring legends that night.
