LEStarting this week, world leaders will gather in Bélem, Brazil for COP30, the first global climate summit held in the rainforest. Brazil is home to 60% of the Amazon - the lungs of the Earth, and one of our planet’s most vital life-support systems. Yet is in peril.
In the last four decades, animal agriculture (pasture and feed crops) has driven 95% of its deforestation in Brazil. Globally animal agriculture and extractive industries like mining and oil have caused the destruction of hundreds of millions of acres of irreplaceable ecosystems.
Indigenous Peoples have shown us that safeguarding nature is our most powerful solution to the climate, biodiversity, and human wellbeing crises. @rewild is honored to be part of the Protecting Our Planet Challenge alongside other partners, and will be pledging another $500 million toward The Forest Tenure Funder’s Group’s effort to help our Indigenous Peoples and local communities protect their ancestral lands.
Our world leaders at COP30 must also guarantee nature’s most effective guardians the resources they need to continue protecting these vital ecosystems, through mechanisms like the Tropical Forests Forever Facility.
I urge leaders to unite and meet the moment. Our future depends on it.
