月の下で見る柳 A willow tree beneath the moon. I never set out to choose a scene with the moon, but its presence has lingered in my thoughts all the time. No matter where I go, I’m drawn to art, literature, and calligraphy that speaks of the moon. I feel an inner energy emanating from it, while the shadows cast by every object blur. Translating this hazy vision into my own interpretation is both the hardest and most fun part of my journey. The materials I work with each sing their own song, and though my skills are still growing, I learn by immersing myself in each experience, allowing the material to guide me. Following on from an earlier post of @christophermcevoy handweaving this cloth, here’s the setup and stitching of the box pleat kilt in the making. It’s the first of a capsule collection we’ll jointly be presenting (with @cavanjayne and @scotredesign) at the Maison d’Exceptions in Paris next month. This annual event offers a platform for 20 artisans around the globe to showcase their innovative and/or ancestral skills to an invited audience…. and this is the first time that Scotland’s textile traditions will be represented by our trio of heritage crafts: promoting natural dye applications, handwoven textiles and trimmings and handstitched kiltmaking, through imaginatively re-sequencing the methods of each maker. Gratefully supported by my @qestcraft Clothworkers Company scholarship. My QEST Scholarship has allowed me to explore the alchemy of natural colour; creating sustainable, botanical oil-based inks from plants and earth pigments. This journey has expanded my practice and deepened my understanding of craft as both an ancient language and a living, evolving art. QEST has supported almost 900 craftspeople across the UK, nurturing skill, imagination and innovation. Their new Investing in the Future of Craft campaign celebrates this legacy and looks ahead, inviting us all to share stories of making, to bid in their anniversary auction, or to donate £35 to help the next generation of makers flourish.
