Here’s the breakdown:
QNH sets your altimeter to show altitude above mean sea level
QFE sets it to show height above a specific airfield (zero on the runway)
QNE is the standard pressure setting (1013.25 hPa), used at flight levels above the transition level
Why does this matter?

The altimeter is one of the most essential instruments in any cockpit. It tells pilots their altitude above mean sea level by measuring atmospheric pressure. As we climb, pressure decreases — the altimeter converts that change into feet.
But here’s the key:
An altimeter is only as accurate as the pressure setting you give it.
🔹 QNH – Sea-level pressure. Used for departure and arrival altitudes.
🔹 QNE – Standard setting (29.92 inHg / 1013 hPa). Used above the transition altitude.
🔹 QFE – Pressure at the airport. Altimeter reads 0 on the runway (used in some regions).
Why it matters:
A small error in the altimeter setting can create hundreds of feet of altitude deviation. That’s why correct setting + cross-checking are vital for flight safety, terrain clearance, and maintaining vertical separation.
Pro tip:
