Have you ever thought about how powerful our lived experience can be? Sure, we can be told things over and over again - but it’s not until we truly experience it for ourselves that we feel it. Take my alcohol experiment, for example. I knew that alcohol did nothing for me. I had done over a year of research on how this substance worked in our brains - I knew. But it wasn’t until I decided to perform an actual experiment on myself that I was truly free. If you haven’t hear the story - I had quit drinking. After all of my research, I knew that alcohol wasn’t serving me. But one St. Patrick’s Day a few months after I had changed my lifestyle I thought “Maybe I was wrong. Maybe drinking isn’t so bad and I thought about this too deeply. So I decided to drink alone, with no “fun” around me or external factors that could affect how the alcohol would make me feel, and I recorded myself. I wanted to see how I changed the more I drank, and see if alcohol was really doing anything for me at all. After that experiment I learned that no - alcohol didn’t do it for me. All it took was my lived experience with it to know for sure! That was over 9 years ago, and I haven’t thought about drinking since. How powerful?! I drank every single day for 15 years. Then, I totally quit for three years. And as I was quitting, I went to a few AA meetings. And I couldn’t stand it: sitting in a circle talking about a drinking problem I didn’t even have anymore. I knew there were more useful things I could do with my limited time. But something was still wrong. Even though I had quit drinking, I was still miserable. Then I realized: drinking wasn’t ever the problem. Drinking was the solution. The problem was that I never felt like enough. I never gave myself a break. And I felt that my worth was determined by how much I could get done in the day. AA doesn’t work for high-achieving professional women because alcohol isn’t (and never was) the issue. So, putting down the drink doesn’t fix anything. You know what does? Finally listening to your body’s call for help. Finally putting yourself first. I don’t think I would have made it through any of those things if I didn’t reach out for help. I’ve been sober now for almost 7 years, and I haven’t had a panic attack in probably 18 months. The biggest piece of advice I can give you right now is to be gentle with yourself. You quit drinking! That is SO HUGE, and something to be so proud of. So maybe you’re carrying around gummy bears everywhere you go like I did, but you’re not drinking. If a little bit of sugar can act as a crutch for a little while, so be it! Strong women never give up. We take a break and come back stronger than ever⛈️🌀 If you know me you know my absolute love and obsession with fog 🌫️ I had to take a moment to appreciate it, be in it. Feel it. A lot has happened since this show last season. Learned a lot about folks out here. This was one of my more difficult seasons and also my most profound and intense change. I found myself on a level that changed my entire being and life. I quit smoking & Quit drinking almost a year ago. One year ago on November 1st an experience that can only be described as a NDE happened and I didn’t come back as the same person. I backed way off of here, media at all of all kinds. I dove into books seeking info on what I went through. I started examining the relationships I have in my life. And who I was and what I did to contribute to things I didn’t like in my life. I went from absolute bliss from my experience to coming out balanced and it’s been a hard adjustment to get used to. If I have backed off here and you noticed, please don’t take it personally. I am still trying to find my way here after being burned so bad last year and then what I experienced…That being said, Some of my most cherished humans have come from this app and for that I will forever be grateful…. I of course have stuff to share from show, and I will get to that this week. But I wanted to kind of give you all a bit of the reason why I haven’t been as present in your feed or in your comments. I’ve even had some ask if I was mad at them… not at all. Im trying to find my way with it all, and I wanted yall to know that it was so damn good to see some of yall this week. Made some new friends who truly lit my soul back up for this sport, saw some forever family that was so good for my heart and really enjoyed my time with my husband after show ended. Sometimes it’s easy to see just the bad in the community but it was nice to be reminded of what this community still has in its heart and that’s a love for the people who love this sport and a love of the sport.
