First approach to minimums ✅ I always flew the RNAV 12 into Somerset (KSMQ, my home airport) as practice (mostly on VFR days), because I wanted to get used to it and turn it into muscle-memory. It payed off today, when I landed back from an amazing week at Oshkosh. All the training and hard work to get my Instrument rating make moments like these all worth it ☁️☁️☁️ Now, time to do it often to stay proficient in it 🤙🏻

Thanks to GPS technology, we now have different minimums depending on the level of precision: 🔹 LPV (Localizer Performance with Vertical guidance): Provides lateral + vertical guidance, almost like an ILS, but using satellites. The most precise RNAV approach. 🔹 LNAV/VNAV (Lateral Navigation / Vertical Navigation): Offers both lateral and vertical guidance, but with higher minimums than LPV. 🔹 LNAV (Lateral Navigation): Lateral guidance only. When it’s installed and approved, it can back you up on ground-based procedures too — but only if you’re using it correctly. A few reminders for instrument pilots: • You can typically use GPS in place of DME or ADF (if authorized) • It doesn’t turn a localizer into an LPV — lateral guidance is all you’re getting • Load the full procedure so your fixes sequence correctly • Check RAIM / WAAS status before you lean on it • Always verify what your AFM/POH actually allows It’s not about making the approach easier. A DME Arc is a precise instrument-flight maneuver that allows aircraft to maintain a constant distance from a navigation station while maneuvering around terrain or airspace ✈️📡 It is commonly used in non-precision and RNAV-assisted approaches where a straight-in path is not possible. A DME Arc works using Distance Measuring Equipment (DME), which provides continuous distance from a VOR or DME station 🧭 Instead of flying directly to or from the station, the aircraft flies a curved path at a fixed radius — typically 8, 10, or 12 nautical miles — like drawing a perfect circle in the sky 🌐 How pilots fly a DME Arc Pilots first intercept the arc at a specific radial 🛫 Once established, they: • Continuously monitor DME distance • Make small heading corrections to stay on the published distance • Use lead radials to anticipate turns, preventing overshoot Think of it as constantly chasing the distance, not the course 🎯 Wind correction on a DME Arc Wind plays a major role 🌬️ • Headwind or tailwind changes turn anticipation • Crosswind pushes the aircraft inside or outside the arc Pilots adjust heading frequently to keep the DME reading constant — usually within ±0.1 NM. Why DME Arcs are used • Terrain avoidance in mountainous areas 🏔️ • Controlled maneuvering around restricted airspace 🚫 • Aligning aircraft with final approach course safely 🛬 • Backup navigation when RNAV is unavailable Modern aircraft and DME Arcs In glass cockpits, DME Arcs can be: • Manually flown using raw data • Automatically flown using FMS-generated arc paths ✈️🤖 Despite automation, pilots must understand the raw-data technique for safety and redundancy.
