Video by @jenniferhayesig | A near-term zebra shark embryo that began its life in an aquarium wriggles inside its egg case. This baby shark is part of a groundbreaking conservation effort called ReShark—an exciting program in which 44 partner aquariums source shark eggs that are flown to Indonesia to be raised at the Raja Ampat Research & Conservation Center on the island of Kri. After hatching, the young pups are cared for by marine biologists, affectionately called shark nannies. The pups live in special tanks and graduate to special sea pens where they learn to forage for their own prey. When they’re large enough to deter predators and pass a final health check, they’re released into patrolled marine protected areas where zebra sharks have vanished because of overfishing. ReShark is a growing global collaboration of 75 partners from 15 countries that have united to put sharks back where they belong. O ReShark, novo grupo liderado por 44 aquários de todo o mundo, visa reconstruir populações de tubarões ameaçados de extinção, reintroduzindo tubarões criados em cativeiro em suas águas nativas. O tubarão do vídeo é o Tubarão - Zebra que está em perigo de extinção. O projeto pretende liberar 500 deles nas águas da Indonésia na tentativa de recuperar uma população selvagem auto-sustentável. Está é uma novidade mundial. Frequentemente são reintroduzidos na natureza animais como condores na Califórnia e pandas gigantes na China, mas nenhuma ação foi tentada com tubarões antes, que estão desaparecendo de forma alarmante ao redor do mundo. Esse nível de desaparecimento se dá principalmente por conta da caça excessiva, legal e ilegal. Milhões de tubarões são mortos anualmente pela sua carne, consumida do Brasil aos Estados Unidos, Índia e Islândia. Os tubarões são essenciais para o mundo marinho. Eles mantêm as teias de alimento do oceano sob controle, assegurando que criaturas menores não cresçam muito e destruam os sistemas naturais que alimentam bilhões de pessoas. With every shark that ReShark reintroduces, marine ecosystems get stronger as sharks are vital to maintaining balance in our oceans. Without them, ecosystems would fall apart as prey species overpopulate, disrupting entire food chains. But a staggering 37% of shark species are facing extinction, with 11,000 to 30,000 sharks killed every hour from industrial fishing. So we need more heroes like ReShark who are championing marine conservation, and helping to bring more sharks back into our oceans!
