THLast week, I emailed my children’s principal to share inclusive Read Across America dress-up day ideas and diverse book suggestions. I made it clear that I did not expect the ideas to be used — they were simply alternatives to centering the week around Dr. Seuss, whose work includes racist imagery and harmful stereotypes.
My hope was that Read Across America Week could truly celebrate reading for all students. I did not receive a response, and the school’s dress-up days remain fully Dr. Seuss themed. As a result, my children will not be participating in those themed days.
I have also communicated with their teachers that if any classroom activities are Seuss-related, my children should be provided an alternative assignment, and I am happy to send one that centers inclusion and diverse books. Advocating for representation and equity isn’t about being difficult — it’s about ensuring every child sees themselves reflected and respected in what we celebrate.
