How did your #bigplasticcount go last week? These are our results - 2 adults + 2 kids - 108 pieces of plastic in one week. Most of it food packaging 😢 There are ways to reduce but....even if we swapped our milk and fruit & veg for plastic free, we would still only be saving about 20 pieces of plastic. We already get most of our fruit and veg loose and we save all our bread bags and cereal bags for reuse. Most of ours are 🍫🍬 and 🐈 food!

Stop “Wish-Recycling” your small plastics! 🛑♻️ Just because it has the ♻️ symbol doesn’t mean it belongs in your curbside bin. Many curbside programs, like ours in Portland, can’t process anything smaller than 2”x2”—it literally falls through the sorting machines or mixes in with other materials causing contamination! But don’t toss them! “Odd-shaped” plastics like floss containers and gummy jars can be saved through specialty recyclers. The Golden Rules of Prep: 1️⃣ DE-GUNK: Ensure they are 100% empty of food or product. 🍬 2️⃣ DE-METAL: That tiny metal clip on your floss? It HAS to go. Mixing materials is the quickest way to turn recycling into trash. ✂️ Where to take them? 📍 These are accepted right here at the Rhone Street Recycle Station! We are so lucky to have local experts like @james_recycling_6 and @p3recycling making this possible. From today - March 16 - you can start recycling food and drink cartons, plastic bags and wrappings in your household recycling. This includes Tetra Pak-style cartons for milk, juice, soups and more. Just give cartons a rinse, squash and put them in your red recycling bag. Squash all your plastic bags, film lids and wrappers into either a either a bread bag, vegetable or fruit bag, or carrier bag to stop it from blowing away. Tie it up and place in your red recycling bag. #recycling #cornwallrecycles #cornwall

Things labelled biodegradable, like PLA or bagasse, still need the correct disposal route to actually decompose. If they end up in general waste or recycling, they often just go to a landfill like normal plastics. 🍃♻️ So before you buy or promote biodegradable packaging, understand how UK recycling and composting systems work — the label isn’t the full story!
