DILegend artist Alex Ross spoke remotely about comics in today's modern age at the RenderCon entertainment tech conference in Hollywood.
He said that he generally liked Kevin Feige and the Marvel Cinematic Universe visual adaptation of comics to the big screen. But he would like to see some more 1:1 comic accurate portrayals of comics costumes into movies, rather than as a joke. He's liked working with digital artists who can create 3D and motion models based on his paintings to help bring them to life on screen.
He hasn't wanted to track how much the numbers have fallen compared to his "heyday in the 90s." Because he was part of an era when the money was much better. He knew his 90s work reached more people through a larger network of bookstores and a more robust comic sales level.
Graphic Novels are the future for comics artists: He highlights that modern graphic novels, such as his work on Fantastic Four and his upcoming projects, are high-quality printed exactly as he dreamed: larger and "more in your face" than traditional comics. He admits he likely won't do a "traditional floppy comic" again because he is unsure of their reach and success in the current market.
Comics Resilience: Despite constant predictions of the industry's death since the 1950s (with the introduction of TV), he observes that it continues to go through cycles of returning and gaining popularity every decade.
Superhero Stability: While people discuss "superhero fatigue," he suggests there is also a "superhero stability" that occurs. Westerns never fully went away but just became less frequent over the decades.
Digital Migration is Positive: He sees the shift of comic content to other media like television and YouTube as a positive "migration of content and concepts" rather than a negative outcome for comics.
His artwork was projected on huge video screens in the conference lounge, almost creating an immersive experience like stepping into his paintings.
