Yes performing “Roundabout” Live at the Rainbow Theatre in London UK⁣ in December of ’72 ⁣⁣ In a nutshell, this song was the band’s breakthrough hit and it came at a time when they weren’t looking for a hit. When released as a single, the song climbed to #13 on the US Hot 100. From a musical standpoint, Steve Howe recalled that the song was originally “a guitar instrumental suite” and had a basic outline worked out when he first developed it. “All the ingredients are there—all that’s missing is the song. “Roundabout” was a bit like that; there was a structure, a melody, and a few lines.” ⁣ ⁣ Originally, the song comprised of Steve playing the guitar parts on a 1953 Martin 00-18, however, he wanted a more dramatic opening and this promoted Rick Wakeman to play a note on the piano that was recorded and played backward, creating an effect that Howe described “as if it’s rushing towards you”. What he did was play the lowest E note on his grand piano with the E an octave higher which gave it “a fatter feel”. Bassist, Chris Squire played his bass guitar parts with an overdub that was one octave higher using Howe’s Gibson ES-150 electric guitar and mixed with his bass track. ⁣ ⁣ In an effort to compliment Squire’s playing, Wakeman played arpeggios on his Hammond C3 organ on his right hand while playing Squire’s bass parts with his left. Richard Christopher Wakeman (born 18 May 1949) is an English keyboardist and composer best known as a member of the progressive rock band Yes across five tenures between 1971 and 2004, and for his prolific solo career. AllMusic describes Wakeman as a “classically trained keyboardist extraordinaire who plied his trade with Yes and developed his own brand of live spectacular in a solo act.” Morning Has Broken - “Morning Has Broken” is a Christian hymn first published in 1931. It has words by English author Eleanor Farjeon and was inspired by the village of Alfriston in East Sussex, then set to a traditional Scottish Gaelic tune, “Bunessan” Cat Stevens’ recording, with piano arranged and performed by Rick Wakeman, led to international recognition of the song. In 2000, Wakeman released an instrumental version of “Morning Has Broken” on an album of the same title. That same year he gave an interview on BBC Radio 5 Live in which he said he had agreed to perform on the Cat Stevens track for £10 and was “shattered” that he was omitted from the credits, adding that he never received the money either. Stevens apologized for the original non-payment and had the record company pay him. Legendary keyboardist and member of Yes, Rick Wakeman, performs Arthur live in 1975. Off The Myths and Legends of King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table, his third solo album released 50 years ago this March. It was a concept album based on the King Arthur legend (a folk hero and a central figure in the medieval literary tradition known as the Matter of Britain). Wakeman began developing the concept in the summer of 1974, while he was in the hospital recovering from a heart attack. Recording took place during his tour for Journey to the Centre of the Earth. Above excerpts from Wembley with the English Rock Ensemble, New World Symphony Orchestra, English Chamber Choir and The Nottingham Festival Singers. Here’s a excerpt from our 2020 interview, where Rick talks about his Minimoog collection: [Danz: What is it that drew you to synthesizers? Rick: Probably hearing Switched-On Bach in 1968. I finally got to meet Wendy Carlos in 1980 in New York and she was really helpful in explaining which low frequencies worked for transferring onto film as I was recording The Burning soundtrack at the time. There was a modular Moog owned by Mike Vickers which was kept in Air Studios during 1971 and I used this on The Strawbs’ From the Witchwood album on a couple of tracks ...And fell in love! I couldn’t afford a Moog and it was only after joining Yes in 1971 that I was able to get one, but even then the price of a new Minimoog was out of my reach. The Yes management also looked after the actor Jack Wild and I was told that he was getting rid of his Minimoog, as it didn’t work, and I could have it for £30! I bought it and there was nothing wrong with it. I called Jack and told him... He said, “well it only plays one note at a time”. I explained that was exactly what it was meant to do and so I would let him have it back but he refused, said it was no use to him and hope I would enjoy it!
