This photo was taken in Port Barton, Palawan, just before I hopped on an ATV to explore the mountains and hidden beaches. It was one of those carefree travel moments where nothing felt urgent. The sun was warm, the air smelled like salt and adventure, and everyone in the homestay was simply living in the moment. What I didn’t know then was that two days later, the world would shut down because of COVID-19. Looking back now, it’s surreal. Some of the people in our homestay were already sick, both locals and travelers. At that time we didn’t fully understand what was happening yet. There was a quiet uncertainty in the air, but we were still laughing, still exploring, still riding around the island like nothing could possibly interrupt that freedom. And maybe that’s the strange beauty of travel. It makes you worry less. It allows you to live in the moment, even if the world outside is slowly changing. That little pocket of innocence might have been oblivious… but sometimes, we need that kind of innocence once in a while.
