NASA just released this stunning image from its SPHEREx space telescope, and it's the first-ever map of the entire sky in this level of detail.
While our human eyes can only see visible light (ROYGBIV), the universe is glowing in colors we can't see. SPHEREx is designed to see the cosmos in 102 different wavelengths of infrared light.
In this map:
The bright band across the middle is our own Milky Way galaxy, teeming with hundreds of millions of stars.
The Red & Orange clouds are cosmic dust and organic molecules (the building blocks of life).
The Blue areas show hot hydrogen gas and blistering young stars.
This mission isn't just making pretty maps; it's hunting for water ice in the Milky Way and looking back 13.8 billion years to solve the mystery of the Big Bang.

NAOne rocket, two missions! 🚀
Two NASA science missions – SPHEREx and PUNCH – will soon begin their journeys of discovery.
SPHEREx will survey the sky in optical and infrared light, gathering data on more than 450 million galaxies, and 100 million stars in our own galaxy. PUNCH will use four suitcase-sized satellites in low Earth orbit to observe the Sun, and tell us more about the space weather that can impact communications on Earth.
Together, the missions highlight NASA's mission to not only explore the cosmos but to unravel the deeper connections that bind us all.
They're set to launch atop a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket from Vandenberg Space Force Base on Monday, March 10 (updated). Liftoff is targeting 7:10pm PT / 10:10pm ET.

LINASA’s SPHEREx space telescope has just released its first all-sky map, combining over 100 infrared observations into a single panoramic view of the universe.
SPHEREx’s defining strength is its panoramic vision. The spacecraft surveys the entire sky every six months, splitting incoming light into 102 distinct infrared “colors” that are invisible to the human eye.

The Korea AeroSpace Administration and the Korea Astronomy and Space Science Institute in partnership with NASA of the U.S. on Dec. 19 announced the release of the first all-sky map captured by the space telescope Spherex.
Since its launch in March, the device has surveyed the entire sky over Earth in 102 infrared colors, with Korean scientists participating in key data analysis tasks for the mission.
The data will be used to study the history of the universe and search for water and ice relevant to the origins of life. The plan is to make a more precise 3D integrated map through further observations.
