Now Curlew call across the saltmarsh, Spoonbills sift the silt, and tidal waters shape the land once more. Together, we’re creating space for wildlife to thrive, and a coastline resilient for us all.

What a point of view! 🗺️ What can look like a flat, simple habitat from the ground turns into a spectacular mosaic of water, plants and brilliant muddy spaces. This view is what wetland birds see when they navigate open spaces like saltmarsh. Join us for an early morning in the saltmarsh! ☀️ RIDEM and USFWS are collaborating with scientists across the region to monitor threatened saltmarsh sparrow populations. We do this through catching birds, measuring and weighing them, and giving them a numbered leg band. Each sparrow is released back into the wild and populations in our saltmarshes are tracked from year to year. This species is at serious risk due to sea level rise, so protecting saltmarshes and their surrounding habitats is critical to keeping this beautiful little bird on the landscape! #rifishandwildlife #rhodeisland

Did you know we grow roughly a million Spartina alterniflora plants every year to restore and protect salt marshes? These plants are the backbone of marshes from Maine to Florida and along the Gulf Coast. Thriving in daily tides, salty water, and low-oxygen soils, they literally build the marsh from the ground up. Their dense roots stabilize sediment, reduce erosion, and help marshes grow, buffering coastlines from waves and storms. When Spartina dies back, it becomes nutrient-rich detritus (dead plant material that decomposes into nutrients), fueling one of the most productive food webs on Earth and supporting fish, shellfish, and birds. These marshes also provide critical nursery habitat for juvenile species like crabs, shrimp, and fish. Different growth patterns occur north to south, but one constant role: Spartina isn’t just a plant — it’s the engine of the salt marsh. 🌊 Happy World Saltmarsh Day 🌊 Today we’re celebrating the superpowers of this amazing wetland habitat. Saltmarshes are coastal wetlands that are filed and drained by the tides, creating a unique watery mosaic of salt tolerant plants, creeks and grasses that host a vast array of wildlife. We’re supporting our charity partners @wwtworldwide on a groundbreaking project to restore salt marshes in the UK. We’ve donated £21m which will enable WWT to restore and manage coastal salt marsh at a landscape- scale and fund research into measuring and maximising its benefits. So whilst they might not always be the prettiest of landscapes next time you’re stood on a coastal plane or mud and grass just take a moment to reflect on how amazing they actually are! #lifeataviva #worldsaltmarshday
