I've been very firm not bending to requests to renovate the home and it's in the original condition from 1981.
The home is a time capsule to that era on the Cuban Mariel Boat Lift (1980) that saw 125k Cuban Refugees arrive in Miami who were integrated into our community. Miami was home to the cocaine cowboys who smuggled drugs by plane to the Bahamas and then were transferred to the fast cigarette boats that offloaded the drugs at this home at the Nixon Helicopter pad. The home was seized in 1990 by the US Marshalls.
Roberto Striedinger, a Colombian pilot for the Medellín cartel, owned the home and was allededly a major cocaine smuggler who later became a government witness.
I had no cares that the home was in the movie when I was 33. I was on magic carpet ride as one of the top bond traders in the world and had just flown my new S-76 Sikorsky helicopter over the property and marveled at the large 35k s.f. helipad built over the water for President Nixon in 1969 and decided I wanted the property. I landed the chopper at the hanger I shared with Wayne Huizenga, the owner of the Dolphins at the time, and drove to Matheson Drive and knocked on the door. I was welcomed by Fred Perkins who bought the home from a DEA Auction in 1990 and had raised his family in the home for many years.
He said no one would ever pay the number he demanded. I didn't negotiate, shook hands, and closed the deal.
What an incredible spot to raise my family and host our extended family and friends.
