KAScars - to hide, to show off or to accept?
One of the most popular questions that I receive is HOW do I manage to feel so comfortable wearing shorts and leave my scars visible (for all the strangers in the street).
And during these 13 years of wearing my scars, I’ve made my own rating on this subject.
The most common reactions (from the least to the most):
1. You’d rather cover the scars, people might get scared (1%)
There’s not a single law in any country on this planet that obeys people with body imperfections to protect others from the way their bodies look like. Every person has the right to look and dress the way she can / wants with no judgments. Those who are disgusted by the way the scars look have the right to turn their heads and stop staring.
2. You’d rather cover the scars, people might insult you (4–5%)
Concerning insults – the MOST offensive reaction I’ve ever received on my scars is INTEREST. It’s up to us how to react to it. Personally I never take it offensive. Normally I just smile to those who stare at my legs and keep on walking my way. Even if strangers would ask me what happened I would briefly tell them my story. Interest itself is absolutely neutral.
3. 95% of people DON’T even notice my scars before I tell them (even though they are pretty noticeable).
So many times it happened to me that the new people I’ve met only asked like after 2 days of observing me wearing shorts – “hey what happened to your legs?” And they swear they haven’t noticed that before. The explanation for that is pretty simple – it happens because I forget about my scars and never focus on them. I wear shorts not to attract attention, not to scare people away, I wear shorts because it is comfortable for me, because I do a lot of sports and am proud of how sporty my legs look. Most people would not put their attention to something you don’t care about – proven by my own experience. I would have not believed it if someone had told me that, but I have no reason to lie to you.
