One of the media’s favorite scare lines, but where else are sharks supposed to live when we enter their environment?
Sharks aren’t monsters,they’re misunderstood.
In 2025, there were just 11 fatal shark incidents worldwide, most caused by a lack of education, poor conditions, or critical mistakes when entering the ocean with an apex predator.
Meanwhile, we kill over 100 million sharks every single year, mostly for their fins, or as bycatch in industrial fishing. Entire populations are collapsing. So who is the real “monster”?
Today, we actually have tools like @sharkbanz , used by surfers and divers, that help reduce unwanted encounters. Education and awareness save lives, panic and fear do the opposite.
Here’s what we need to remember:
Sharks are essential.
They’re apex predators that keep the ocean healthy and balanced.
They remove the weak and the sick, strengthening fish populations and preventing reef collapse.
Without sharks, the entire food chain breaks, starting with coral reefs, ending with us.
Sharks have survived five mass extinctions.
They’re older than dinosaurs. Older than trees.
With over 500 species — from whale sharks to lanternsharks, they are some of the most remarkable animals on Earth.
But they’re disappearing.
Not because they’re dangerous.
Because we are.
It’s time to do better.
Support eco-tourism that protects sharks.
Don’t support shark finning or eat shark meat.
Educate others. Spread facts, not fear.
Use your voice, because sharks don’t have one.
Sharks have been here long before us.
Let’s make sure they’re here long after us, too.
No sharks = no healthy ocean.
No healthy ocean = no us.

FLPermission to come aboard, sir! 🦈 Atlantic shortfin mako shark turns the tides of this fight with incredible swiftness as she welcomes herself aboard this vessel for a quick deck shimmy. What, no one wants to dance with this ole ragtime gal?
Powerful, fast and aggressive, this acrobatic pelagic predator cruises at an average of 20 miles per hour and can exhibit bursts of speed up to 45mph, making the shortfin mako the fastest of all sharks. This species’ athleticism is not restricted to its swimming speeds. It is known for its incredible leaping ability and can be observed jumping to extreme heights out of the water.
You may also notice the makos stunning coloration: bright cobalt blue on the back and stark white on their underside. This color split is called countershading and helps them blend in with the ocean around them, blue when seen from above to match with the dark water and white from below to mimic the sun.
The primary prey of this species mackerel, swordfish, tuna, bonito and squid. While it is less common, they will also feed on sea birds, other sharks, sea turtles and small porpoises. Because they are such fast creatures, they have a higher metabolism, and must feed more frequently. To survive, they must eat 3% of their body weight. For a 150 pound shark, that’s approximately 4.5 pounds of fish per day.
While these sharks rarely interact with humans, the vast majority of attacks occur when the shark becomes caught on a fishing line, or is otherwise provoked. Better keep your head on a swivel with a mako shark on the line. Anything can happen out there.
