They wanted to outdo VENOM, who were considered the ultimate in crassness at the time, in terms of speed and viciousness, after SLAYER were influenced more by classic metal bands such as IRON MAIDEN and MERCYFUL FATE in their earliest days. Show No Mercy“ still clearly bears witness to these influences and thus occupies an exceptional position in the thrashers‘ discography. A stunner of a debut considering it was released in 1983. SLAYER - War Ensemble: Song History The music and lyrics for “War Ensemble” were written by Jeff Hanneman (Tom assisted with the lyrics) back in 1989. On October 9, 1990, the song was released as the first track on Slayer’s fifth studio album, Seasons in the Abyss. Shortly after its release, Jeff was accused of glorifying militarism, war itself, and inciting aggression. 📝 Jeff: “I’m not forcing anyone to fight. We’re not starting wars. We’re simply showing the ugly side of it all. There’s probably no other side to war.” It is not surprising that this song touched people’s feelings so deeply and even offended them, since the album was released a month after the start of the Gulf War. 📝 Tom Araya: “It was right before Bush’s first attack on Iraq.” According to surveys of American soldiers participating in Operation Desert Storm in 1991 in Iraq, this song was the most popular among those used in preparation for combat operations. 📝 Tom: “They played it over the loudspeakers. The song is very intense, the music really fits that moment when you need inspiration for aggression—and you need it, otherwise you’ll come home deаd. But we’re not inspiring war—we’re simply describing the situation, the chaos and panic of real combat.” In December 1990, Slayer arrived in Egypt to film the video for Seasons in the Abyss. They talked to the soldiers (who were very pleased with their new record) and met with Egyptian officials to formalize the paperwork that would allow them to obtain filming rights in and around the pyramids. 📝 Kerry King: “We bribed everyone with pørn and ciğarettes. It’s amazing what doors that opens...” The filming of the War Ensemble video was no less difficult and almost failed The original plan was this: at a concert at Wembley Stadium on October 14, 1990, the band would play a recording of the song, people would go crazy - and a video would be created. But when Tom announced this to the crowd, the fans booed They had to film a live performance. The difficulty was that the band wasn’t playing to a click track—they had to play as close to the original as possible. You can notice a slight out-of-synch between the lyrics and Tom’s lip sync :)

O álbum de estreia da banda, lançado pela Metal Blade Records, não só apresentou o mundo a Tom Araya, Kerry King, Jeff Hanneman e Dave Lombardo, mas também ajudou a solidificar as bases do Thrash Metal e do Metal extremo. ​Com uma sonoridade crua e influências notáveis da NWOBHM e do Heavy Metal tradicional, o disco trouxe letras chocantes e uma velocidade inédita que o diferenciava dos seus contemporâneos. Músicas como "Black Magic", "The Antichrist" e "Die by the Sword" se tornaram clássicos instantâneos e permaneceram no setlist da banda por décadas. ​Curiosidade: Devido ao baixo orçamento, a banda teve que financiar a gravação com o salário de Tom Araya (que era terapeuta respiratório) e um empréstimo do pai de Kerry King.
