Dr. Aston’s clinic was usually a place of quiet recovery, but today it held a strange sight. In the corner of the office, on a plush velvet rug, sat Barnaby.
Barnaby was a Pallas’s cat—a round, incredibly fluffy ball of silver-grey fur with flat ears and a permanent expression of intense judgment. Most people thought he was perpetually angry, but Dr. Aston knew he was just... misunderstood.
An Unexpected Patient
That morning, Dr. Aston had brought home an orphaned wild rabbit, no bigger than a tennis ball. The little creature was shivering and weak. "Stay here, little one," the doctor whispered, placing the bunny in a heated basket before rushing off to an emergency surgery.
The Transformation
Barnaby watched the basket with his wide, amber eyes. He let out a low, gravelly huff. To any observer, it looked like he was contemplating a snack. He hopped off his perch and padded over, his thick tail thumping softly on the floor.
But instead of a pounce, Barnaby did something unexpected:
He sniffed the air cautiously.
He climbed into the basket, his massive amount of fur nearly swallowing the tiny rabbit.
He let out a deep, vibrating purr that sounded like a rusty engine.
A Perfect Match
When Dr. Aston returned an hour later, he froze. Barnaby was curled into a perfect circle around the bunny. The rabbit, feeling the immense warmth of the densest fur in the feline world, had fallen fast asleep against Barnaby’s side.
Barnaby looked up at the doctor, his face still looking like he had just swallowed a lemon, but his claws were tucked in and his ears were relaxed. He gave a soft "mew" as if to say, "Don't just stand there, I’m busy babysitting."
From that day on, the grumpiest cat in the clinic became the gentlest protector.
