Robots are learning to keep going even if you cut their limbs off. The unicorn startup Skild AI says its universal robot brain empowers the quadruped in newly shared footage to adapt to the loss of limbs without extra training, programming, or help from humans. Engineers tied its legs, wiping out four degrees of freedom and shortening the limbs in a way its AI had never seen before. The robodog, developed by Chinese robotics leader Unitree, adapted within seven seconds, rewiring its strategy on the fly. Without the Skild Brain, the robot thrashed around until it became immobile on its back. Skild, launched in 2023 by Carnegie Mellon professors, is valued at $4.5 billion.
