Prescribed Burn Supports Birds & Pollinators at Eagle Creek Park 🔥🌼🦋🐦 On March 24th, DPW Indy Land Stewardship staff, along with contractors from EcoLogic, successfully conducted prescribed burns on three pollinator plantings in the park. These areas were originally installed several years ago to enhance wildlife habitat and support native bees, butterflies, and moths. (Did you know Indiana is home to around 150 butterflies, and over 2,000 species of moths?!) 🦋 Prescribed burning is an important land management tool that helps control invasive weeds, reduce woody debris buildup, and promote the germination of native wildflowers. It also returns valuable nutrients to the soil, strengthening the overall health of prairie and grassland ecosystem. 🐦How does prescribed burning help birds? Many of Central Indiana’s native bird species depend on the open habitats created by periodic fire. Grassland birds in particular thrive after burns because: • Fire removes dense brush and woody growth, keeping prairies open • New plant growth produces seeds and attracts insects—key food sources for birds • Reduced woody debris makes it easier for birds to move, forage, and nest on the ground 🐦Species that benefit from these conditions include: • Eastern Meadowlark – prefers open grasslands with fresh growth • Red-winged Blackbird – benefits from improved meadow and grassland edges • Henslow’s Sparrow – a conservation-priority species that relies on well-managed grasslands By maintaining diverse prairie conditions through prescribed fire, land managers help support a wider variety of bird species—many of which have declined due to habitat loss. Fire essentially “resets” the landscape, creating the mix of vegetation structure that birds need to feed, nest, and survive. These carefully planned and controlled burns play a vital role in maintaining vibrant, diverse habitats that benefit pollinators, birds, and the entire ecosystem. Controlled burns are usually done during the dormant season every 3-5 years to maintain these habitats.

A controlled burn day to clean up my little green corner of the world. An opportunity in late winter early spring to promote new growth for all for all wildlife, birds, mammals and reptiles. Being a conservationist is more than just owning land. It’s being a caretaker of that land, a steward of the land in the spirit of the great conservationist, David Theroux. #widlife #earth #conservation #wildlifeconservation #wisconsin

Prescribed burns were happening this week in the UWArboretum. Fire might seem surprising in a natural area, but it’s actually an important tool for restoration. Prescribed burns help mimic the conditions that created and maintained Wisconsin’s prairie and oak savanna ecosystems before European settlement. When done carefully, fire helps native plants thrive by: • Controlling invasive weeds • Removing built-up thatch • Returning nutrients to the soil These burns are carefully planned and tightly controlled. Land managers wait for the right weather conditions and use trained crews to keep the fire at the right intensity and within a specific area. Across the Lake Wingra watershed, controlled burns take place in several locations, including city parks, prairie restoration areas along the Southwest Commuter Bike Path, prairie restoration areas and rain garden near the Odana Hills Golf Course, and throughout the UW Arboretum. So if you smell of smoke in the coming weeks, there’s a good chance it’s a planned prescribed burn helping restore and maintain our local ecosystems.

Our regenerative land management practices go far beyond the ways we grow diverse "specialty" crops to the ways we steward the land as a holistic ecosystem. Building native wildflower and warm season grass savannahs on the land is a passion project of my parents through the help of the amazing Andy Kane. The savannahs were built over the last 8 years through selective tree thinning, controlled burns, and overseeing native plant species. The bi annual controlled burns that we do on the property are one of my favorite things to witness and observe the lasting impacts from. Controlled burns, or prescribed fires, are used to enhance ecosystem health, reduce wildfire hazards, and promote new growth. People have been using this practice for centuries. By deliberately burning accumulated fuel like dead branches and leaves, we can minimize the risk of catastrophic wildfires (less common in our area) and, more importantly for us, control competing woody vegetation/invasive species to improves wildlife habitat. We now have a covy of bobwhite quail who call the farm home. Seeing and hearing the bobwhite on this land is an unparalleled thrill I never imagined I'd experience in farming! Thank you for giving me this opportunity through your dedicated work on this project, Dad! #controlledburn #prescribedfire

Getting ready at LAFF for some controlled burns this season! Also called a prescribed burn, the use of fire has been used to create and revitalize habitat for thousands of years. There are many native species that respond well to fire, and we also hope fire will help control the species we don't want here. Safety first, so we are ensuring we have a solid perimeter. Now we wait until we have the right weather conditions and a knowledgeable fire team ready, and then we burn! #leafandfeatherfarms #habitatrestoration #controlledburn

Bradley owner of @buckhavenlandsolutions began the first phase of restoration work for Project Bobwhite. This tract was historically part of our cattle operation and portions of it will continue to be utilized for grazing. Working alongside Bradley, the goal is to gradually restore native warm season grasses while integrating managed grazing with our cattle to provide some large herbivore disturbance to help maintain open grassland structure for bobwhite quail. While this particular tract isn’t the highest quality quail habitat within the project area, Bradley explained that it will still provide valuable transitional habitat and support other wildlife species such as deer and turkey. Follow along as we continue the process of restoring native pasture systems and savanna structure across the rest of the tract.

It's warming up at BFO! DNR staff recently conducted a prescribed fire to help maintain their native pollinator planting. Prescribed burns are used to mimic natural disturbances that improve habitat and have many benefits for humans, wildlife, and ecosystems including: 🔥Maintaining grassland habitat and different forest types 🔥Allowing grassland habitat to persist by killing off more aggressive trees and shrubs 🔥Increasing plant diversity by encouraging fire-adapted grasses and wildflowers 🔥Removing obstacles that hinder wildlife mobility 🔥Releasing nutrients bound in dead organic material 🔥Reducing the spread of plant diseases Learn more about the benefits, history, and implementation of prescribed burns through the link in our bio.
