starting solids + feeding my babies is my absolute favorite! now i’m no BLW expert, i leave the expertise to @solidstarts + @feedinglittles . i’ve learned everything i know from them! 🤗 but these are the things i do with my baby to start prepping for solids: • play in highchair i love to do this as an awake time activity. kills two birds with one stone! getting him used to the chair helps him feel secure + comfortable in the new seat. it creates a positive association + reduces pressure when food is in the picture. this also helps build core, neck + head strength, which is super important for swallowing safety. • proper feet placement making sure his feet are flat on a surface is essential for stability, safe swallowing + improved motor skills. engages his core, prevents slouching + reduces choking risks when food is introduced. • play with feeding spoon letting him play with his spoons + toys in the chair encourages reaching, grasping + bringing things to his mouth. this helps him practice for self-feeding when the time comes! • sitting practice he needs to be able to sit with minimal assistance before starting solids to properly move food in the mouth + swallow safely. so it’s important to practice building that core strength. • observing me eat babies learn through watching us! having him watch me take big bites + chew helps him learn how to manage food in his mouth. it encourages curiosity + when he watches me handle food, he learns how to interact with it, reducing hesitation when he gets his own food 🥹. • understanding gagging vs choking when i started solids with my first, i was super nervous. i watched A LOT of gagging videos to get comfortable watching my son gag as he explored food. if this is your first time starting solids, i highly recommend doing this. • be prepared i’m CPR certified. being prepared helps me feel confident in my skills in case there is ever a situation where choking is involved. have you started solids yet?? how’s it going? 📌save for later or share with another parent!

Comment “yummy” and I will send you a link to my feeding essentials. These are the steps we took to teach Maddie how to use a spoon confidently. Step 1: Let her play with the spoon so she feels comfortable using it Step 2: Hand her the spoon with a thick puree so she can put it into her mouth Step 3: Place the preloaded spoon on the table. We found that having the bowl or plate on the table was too distracting for her, so having just the spoon on the table helped her focus on it Step 4: Place the preloaded spoon in the bowl for her to pick up Step 5: Use the hand-over-hand method to teach her how to scoop It’s a lot easier if you use food that’s thick and sticky, like a thick puree or porridge. #babyledweaning #blw #feedingmilestones #babyeating #weaningjourney #solidstarts #montessoribaby #babyledfeeding #firstfoods #babymilestones

Don’t make the mistake of sticking with something if it isn’t working for you when your baby starts solids! Hi, my name is Leah. I’m a Pediatric Dietitian of 10 years and a second time mom. Here are some of the things that I immediately ditched when my second baby started solids. 1. The bib - all he wanted to do was eat it and tug on it. I knew that we only have so much time he would tolerate in the highchair so that was one of the first things I immediately ditched. 2. The plate. He was more interested in the plate than the food. And again, I knew we only had so much time that he would want to be in the chair + I wanted to optimize that time as best I could. I know that the mess is going to happen whether I want it to or not, and whether the bib or the plate is there or not. So as a second time mom I’m embracing the mess and focusing on keeping mealtimes positive. 3. High expectations- I completely forgot just how long this process takes, that they’re still learning and they really aren’t very coordinated yet. So sometimes it takes what feels like five minutes to pick up the food just because it’s so slippery and their fine motor skills are still developing. Seated jump. How do you get here? Well it starts with becoming a team with your babe. And that’s happens from starting small in the tub. Getting babe to understand the verbal cue, and anticipate water. Once cup pours are solidified, then forward front submersions. If this is solid, child is non reactive to water, child has gone under for weeks, with NO issues, they will be ready for a seated jump. You must get their attention. You must initiate the verbal cue, and be confident guiding them into the water and directing them back to safety. Celebrate the wins! Don’t rush to this step. Child should have substantial opportunities to voluntarily put their face in water before starting this skill. No matter what age your child is, if you’re going to have them jump in, they must be comfortable with being submerged under the water! Education is 🔑 to building your confidence, so you can build your child’s! 👇 @prepare2swim Comment Prepare2Swim for more information! Thoughts? 💭 Quick insight: it rarely goes left in one big moment — it’s a slow shift you don’t catch at first. A random convo turns into a daily thing, outside attention starts feeling regular, and before you even realize it, the energy ain’t as solid or transparent as it used to be. Nothing looks off in the beginning, so it’s easy to brush it off. But real talk, loyalty ain’t about dodging one obvious mistake — it’s about how someone moves every day. The small choices, the boundaries they keep, and how they handle attention when nobody’s watching says everything. If the same patterns keep showing up, you’re not trippin’ — you’re just seeing it clearly. Because at the end of the day, actions don’t miss… they always reveal what words try to cover.

Parents often ask — “A pinch of salt, a little sugar… what harm can it do?” In babies, even small amounts can stress their tiny kidneys and taste buds. Salt before 1 year can affect blood pressure and kidney development. Sugar before 2 years increases the risk of cavities and early sweet preference. Their food doesn’t need seasoning — their taste buds are brand new. Let them enjoy the natural flavours of fruits, veggies, grains, and lentils. When you start clean, they learn to love real food. No added salt. No added sugar. Just pure, wholesome beginnings. Your baby’s future health starts with these early choices. Keep it simple. Keep it safe. Keep it natural.
