Have some time to krill? How about spending it learning about one of the unsung heroes of our ocean on this #WorldKrillDay? Don’t be fooled by their small size; krill have a massive impact on our planet’s health. Filling the Southern Ocean with exceptional biomass, Antarctic krill populations alone amount to an estimated 400 million tonnes– and there are still four more species found in the region! In a swarm of krill, there can be as many as 30,000 individuals per square meter. With their incredible abundance, they keep the majority of the Southern Ocean’s marine predators fed, including baleen whales, penguins, and many others. The hoards of krill in the #SouthernOcean also keep phytoplankton populations in check– helping maintain balance in the ecosystem. Additionally, krill help distribute nutrients across various depths. When they ingest phytoplankton, they absorb their carbon contents and expel dense, carbon-rich pellets that sink quickly to the bottom of the ocean. Here, it can be sequestered in the sea floor sediments. Remarkably, research has shown that krill can help remove 12 million tonnes of carbon from our atmosphere each year. However, due to the loss of sea ice, warming seas, and overfishing, their populations have dropped by 80% over the last 50 years. Krill’s impact ripples through our ocean, and by protecting them through marine protected areas and other measures, we help support our planet’s natural ability to mitigate climate change.
