Spirit of Place ✨🌿💚 To 'walk beautifully on the Earth' is to live in a way that is mindful, gentle and deeply connected to nature. It is to allow the natural world to shape us rather than to impose our will upon it. It means recognising our relationship with all living things, fostering a spirit of non-domination and wonder toward the natural world, and moving beyond a mindset that sees the Earth only as a resource. Part of walking beautifully is acknowledging the ancestors of the land on which you stand. When I first reached out to Sanakori, it was because I wanted a representative of the Taíno people to give me permission to work with the land in El Yunque. His kindness, openness and invitation grounded us in El Yunque last year. Now, as we deepen this bond, I feel humbled and honoured that he accepted the invite to teach at our upcoming November retreat. I feel blessed that we will sit in ceremony, listen, and learn. This is not something I take lightly. It feels like a sacred responsibility; to walk in humility, to hold space for Indigenous wisdom, to show up to the Land. To cultivate wonder and presence, we must approach the world with a barefoot heart and a barefoot mind, honouring the earth by being fully present in its wild places. To recognise our universal connectedness is to remember that humans, animals, plants and stones and the unseen spirits of place are kin, and that peace comes through coexistence with both the seen and the unseen, those bigger powers. Our El Yunque Retreat, November 3rd–9th 2025, is shaped around Rewilding and Centering. You are invited to rediscover yourself in the untamed beauty of El Yunque Rainforest. To step away. To breathe. To return to that inner stillness. We will embrace the elements. We will immerse ourselves in rainforest, water, wind, earth and fire. We will move in ceremony, in silence, in sound. We will allow the Land to hold us. Sanakori’s presence is a bridge, a living link to ancestral lines and to the wisdom murmuring in river stones and bamboo trees. The spirits of the Land I live on is the most important to my craft. Over the years this took the shape of the Man in Black, various Gods of nature, Hairy Cain, etc… but it’s only in the last five years that I’ve come to really connect with the spirits of the Land itself, rather than entities which hold command over wildness — two very separate things! They’ve taught me more about this craft than any book could: 1. We are infinitely small, yet we are needed. Our importance is near to none, but the spirits need us, as mediator between the world of spirits and that of men, to act as their arms and legs. Picking up trash, uprooting invasive species, sowing the seeds of endangered species, and acting on behalf of the Land within our communities are the best way to honour its spirits and gain its trust. 2. Land spirits can be unkind, and sometimes more dangerous than spirits more known for their brutality. River spirits are particularly dangerous, causing illness in the lungs, rheumatism, and sometimes sowing madness when disrespected. Spirits of places polluted and abused are often wrathful and deceitful. Spirits of ruins often mislead us and alter our sense of time. Spirits of crossroads, especially those of deserted places, will quickly sour our blessings if they are disrespected. Protection is important when working with the Land, as much as it is when working with “scarier” spirits. 3. Asking for permission will propel you forward in all your work. The Land shows us how it would like to work with us; offerings given before a hike or foraging trip, made to ask for permission to work the Land, will grant you a greater harvest, a closer connection to the spirits of place, and the good attention of the spirits. 4. We are spirit as much as those disembodied. As practitioners of magic, we walk surrounded by energy and spirits. The spirits of the Land, whether they are spirits of place, spirits of the Wandering Dead, or minor local “deities”, will sense and see us, and those curious will come knocking at our doors for better or worse. Protect yourself and your loved ones, set boundaries, and journey to their home rather than invite them in. Cheers, Mahigan

Linden Rd Project. Loci’s construction team has successfully installed our native garden design and the project is now ready for the horticulture team @loci_native_gardens. Our plant schedule from @silverbanksianursery is almost ready for autumn planting which is great timing as the soils are still warm and the rains slowly start to add moisture to the land. A local, endemic and coastal compact species list that has been carefully considered and reflects the sites location. Creating habitat and elements of shelter, water and appropriate species choice will encourage the local wildlife to come into this space and find refuge from the ever progressing development of our coastal spaces. Gardens that can be enjoyed by our clients that reflect their location, lifestyle and surrounding landscape, while also supporting the native flora and fauna is our speciality and we are grateful for the opportunity to do so.
