If you’re looking for a beautiful easy hike in Washington, Deep Creek Trail is the one I recommend. Just outside Spokane, this short trail winds through basalt cliffs, towering rock formations, and rolling hills carved by ancient volcanic activity and massive Ice Age floods, all set alongside the Spokane River.

1️⃣ @downrivergrill: If you haven’t tried the DRG Burger, you’re missing out! The chipotle BBQ bacon-onion jam is bold and packs a ton of flavor. I’ll get it every single time I’m in the Audubon area!
2️⃣ @lorenbistro: The Loren Burger is special… Glazed pork belly? Yes🙌 Pro tip: Do not skip the parmesan frites. And add on a side of garlic aioli for dipping🔥
3️⃣ @durkins_liquor_bar: The Durkin’s Famous Double is a Spokane classic. Made with two patties and in-house American cheese… honestly, there would be public outcry if this didn’t make the list.
4️⃣ @wisconsinburgerspokane: Their signature Wisconsin Burger is perfection. It has all the standard toppings you normally find on a burger (plus caramelized onion!). It just always hits the spot. Side note: two (maybe three?) words…in-house custard. Their frozen custard is amazing - so make sure you save room!

MCWant to know the truth about winter in Spokane?
It ROCKS.
✨ Yes, sometimes it feels like it lasts forever (we typically have snow on the ground off & on from December - March)
✨ Yes, the temperatures can get cold. Like REALLY cold (it was -8 degrees with wind chill a few days ago 🥶)
✨ Yes, there are parts of town I avoid driving after a big snowfall (but between you and I, these are also the most beautiful places under a fresh blanket of snow!)
✨ And yes— winter in Spokane makes you SO excited and ready for the spring and summer months.
But, I couldn’t imagine living somewhere without the beauty and charm of snowfall (even when that can cause some headaches).
Not to mention— I would take sunshine and fresh snow to a winter of straight rain any day 🫣
If you’re looking for a city with all the amenities AND 4 seasons in Washington…. Spokane is it. 📍 Plain and simple.

ya know, it was hard to tell this story.. when a few people had told me look this up, I didn’t realize any of this. I think what became more frustrating was how difficult the monuments were to find, and the narrative they tell.
It brought me back to my childhood, growing up in The Dalles, OR. Being en route along the Oregon Trail, we learned alot about the “history” of the area. I have vivid memories of how they depicted Native Americans. Savage, aggressive, scalpers that massacred those innocent Whitman missionaries. Needless to say, the monuments tell a similar narrative.
Do yourself a favor and take some time to learn about our local history. They were defending their land in the only way they knew how.
I’m probably out of pocket and got the details wrong, someone, somewhere, will always be offended.. but I think it was an important story that needed to be told. It was a big part of our local history and we should be aware of how Spokane came to be.
