STIn his 2018 address at the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Memorial Lecture, National Security Advisor Ajit Doval remarked on how a single mistake or blunder made by world leaders in the past had completely change the course of history, not only for entire nations, but for the world at large as well.
Drawing lessons from global and regional events, Doval underlined how the fate of nations often turns not on a series of failures, but on a single strategic mistake. He cited examples ranging from Adolf Hitler’s invasion of Russia, Mussolini’s misadventure in Greece, Japan’s bombing of Pearl Harbor, and the Soviet Union’s entry into Afghanistan, to illustrate how one miscalculation can undo even the most dominant positions of power.
Bringing the argument closer to India’s own history, Doval spoke of how Jawaharlal Nehru ignoring Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel’s advice on the Kashmir issue proved costly. He further highlighted the 1970 Pakistan National Assembly elections, noting that the refusal to allow the Awami League—despite its absolute majority—to form the government directly led to the creation of Bangladesh.
Through these examples, Doval stressed that leaders may believe they are acting correctly, yet one flawed decision can have irreversible consequences.
The core message of the speech was clear and cautionary: national security and governance demand foresight, humility, and the wisdom to avoid critical mistakes. History, Doval argued, is less forgiving of errors than it is generous toward success.
