Gardening isn’t just a hobby. It’s a longevity protocol. A 2016 meta-analysis in the British Journal of Sports Medicine found gardening is linked to a 10-20% lower risk of death. A Stockholm study showed people over 60 who gardened regularly had a 30% lower risk of heart attack or stroke even when other exercise was factored out. Here’s what’s actually happening when you’re out there: → Digging loads your spine and hips - building the bone density that protects you from fractures. → Twisting to throw weeds behind you keeps your thoracic spine mobile - the rotation most people lose in their 50s. → Squatting down and standing up without hands? That’s the sit-rise test. Research links it directly to mortality risk. → Getting your hands into soil exposes you to Mycobacterium vaccae - a bacteria shown to boost serotonin and reduce inflammation. → Being in nature lowers cortisol and calms your nervous system. A Harvard study found women in greener areas had 12% lower mortality - partly from reduced depression and more social connection. → Sunlight on your skin triggers Vitamin D production - essential for bones, immunity, and energy. → Eating fresh veg you’ve grown? Maximum nutrients, zero processing. And here’s the thing: In all five Blue Zones - the places where people live the longest and I run my retreats, gardening is a daily habit. Not gym sessions. Not marathons. Just regular movement built into life. Your allotment isn’t just growing food. It’s growing your independence. Follow for more strength, mobility, and calm for women who refuse to slow down 💪

Gardening offers more than beauty—it nourishes body and mind. Growing your own food connects you to nature, increases physical activity, reduces stress, and provides fresh, nutrient-dense produce. It can improve mood, support gut health through fresh plants, encourage time in sunlight, and build a deeper appreciation for real food and the earth that grows it. A simple garden can transform your health and lifestyle. 🌱🍃

1. Saturday morning. Gloves on. Hands in soil. No gym mirrors. No productivity tracker. Just watering, trimming, planting. It feels simple. Almost too simple to matter. But gardening combines low-intensity movement, sunlight exposure, and microbial contact in one repeated ritual. 2. Soil isn’t just dirt. It contains microorganisms like Mycobacterium vaccae that have been studied for potential mood-regulating effects through immune signaling pathways. Light exposure boosts vitamin D and reinforces circadian rhythm. Mild physical effort improves insulin sensitivity. One habit. Multiple systems. 3. The missing ingredient in modern life isn’t another supplement. It’s environmental diversity. Air-conditioned rooms, filtered air, screens all day. The immune system gets fewer natural calibrations. Time in a garden increases sensory variation: temperature shifts, natural light gradients, plant compounds in the air. The nervous system downshifts without forcing relaxation. 4. Cardiovascular benefit isn’t from intensity. It’s from consistency. Thirty to forty minutes of light yard work can lower resting bl*od pressure over time when repeated weekly. Not dramatic. Incremental. The kind of adaptation that compounds quietly rather than spikes dramatically. 5. Test this for 30 days. Spend at least 30 minutes in a garden or green space three times per week. No headphones. Track resting h*art rate, mood stability, and sleep onset time. If RHR trends down, mood steadies, or sleep comes faster, the life-extending ingredient wasn’t hidden in a capsule. It was in the soil. Follow so you don’t miss what’s next.

Gardening isn’t just relaxing it’s actually evidence-based medicine for your body. 🌱 Research shows that regular gardening can improve multiple health markers: 🌱Improves blood sugar control – Gardening is moderate physical activity that increases glucose uptake in muscles and improves insulin sensitivity. 🌱Reduces cortisol and stress – Exposure to green environments has been shown to lower stress hormones and support nervous system regulation. 🌱Supports cardiovascular health – Activities like digging, planting, and weeding count as moderate exercise and are associated with lower blood pressure and improved circulation. 🌱Improves mental health – Soil contains microbes such as Mycobacterium vaccae, which has been linked to increased serotonin production and improved mood. 🌱Encourages healthier eating – People who grow food are more likely to consume fruits, vegetables, fiber, and phytonutrients. 🌱Supports longevity – Gardening is one of the most common daily activities in Blue Zone populations, where people regularly live into their 90s and 100s. This is exactly why Lifestyle Medicine focuses on simple daily habits that create long-term health. Sometimes the most powerful prescription is not a pill… It’s sunlight, movement, fresh air, and your hands in the soil. 👩‍🌾 Simona DeLucia, MSN, APRN, FNP-C #LifestyleMedicine #PreventiveMedicine #LongevityScience #BlueZoneLifestyle #FunctionalMedicine

This morning started off soft and peaceful. I reached over and plucked the prettiest white cosmos and just stood there for a second taking it all in. Then came the real work! I checked my collards for pests—which meant a whole lot of squatting, bending, and getting low to those leaves. And let me tell you…that garden “exercise” will humble you real quick! But I don’t mind it one bit. Every squat is keeping these legs strong, these knees moving, and this body active especially since I skipped gym this morning. By the time I was done, I had a beautiful bundle of fresh collards in my hands—already knowing what was coming next…a pot on the stove with turkey necks, some cornbread on the side, and blackeye peas to round it all out. Now that’s a meal that feeds more than just your stomach…it feeds your soul. This season of life has taught me to slow down, take care of my body, and appreciate these simple, meaningful moments a whole lot more. For my 50+ crew: Do you find yourself moving your body more in the garden than anywhere else—and actually enjoying it more? #Over50AndThriving #GardenLife #GrowingYourOwnFood #CollardGreens

When it comes to warm-weather activities that are good for your health, you probably think of walking, hiking or running. But there’s another beloved pastime that holds a lot of benefits with a bonus to boot: Gardening. Even if you don’t have the greenest of thumbs, there are many health benefits — both physical and mental — that come with digging into the soil and doing some planting. Get the low-down on how gardening does you good and tips to get you started from neurosurgeon and spine specialist, Deborah Benzil, MD. Osteoporosis prevention: Osteoporosis is a condition in which your bones weaken, losing mass and strength and putting them at greater risk of fractures. Affecting over 50 million people in the U.S. alone, it’s most prominent in people over 50 years of age, and affects more women than men. Brain health: Dr. Benzil points out that there are many brain health benefits to gardening regularly. While there have been several studies that focus on how gardening is a great therapeutic treatment for people with dementia, there’s also been research that shows gardening is one of many activities that potentially prevents dementia. Mental health benefits: There are also a few mental health benefits to gardening, says Dr. Benzil. Besides the boost to your mood from being outdoors in the fresh air, there’s a sense of satisfaction you get as you see your plantings grow and flourish. It also can provide social interaction with others, whether you’re in your yard or a community garden. How to: While gardening is easier on the body than running or mountain-climbing, that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t stay safe and be aware of certain tips that can help make it a better experience. “Understand that gardening is an exercise. Any time you start a new exercise program, you want to make sure that you do it in the right way,” advises Dr. Benzil. Among her tips: -Start slowly. “Start with shorter intervals and work your way up to larger, longer intervals.” -Keep your scale manageable. “Don’t try to dig too much or carry too much right away.” -Use the right equipment. “Make sure your scissors and shovels are sharp, and even get a kneeling bench.” #WomenAndAlzheimers

@mccoyfutchjourney Putting your hands in soil—often called grounding or gardening therapy—has real physical, mental, and even emotional benefits. It’s more powerful than it seems 🌱 🌿 Mental & Emotional Benefits Reduces stress & anxiety: Soil contains microbes (like Mycobacterium vaccae) that may help boost serotonin—your “feel good” hormone Improves mood naturally: Being in nature + tactile sensation creates a calming effect similar to meditation Decreases depression symptoms: Regular gardening has been linked to improved emotional well-being 🌞 Physical Health Benefits Boosts immune system: Exposure to natural bacteria can strengthen your immune response Vitamin D intake: Sunlight exposure helps your body produce vitamin D Gentle exercise: Digging, planting, and weeding improve mobility, strength, and circulation 🌍 Nervous System & Grounding Regulates your nervous system: Touching the earth can help bring your body out of “fight or flight” Promotes grounding (earthing): Direct contact with soil may reduce inflammation and improve sleep Enhances mindfulness: It pulls you into the present moment, reducing overthinking #Health #grounding #gardening #garden #bayarea

At 103 years old, he’s still gardening, walking, and enjoying life. His secret isn’t complicated. Every morning he wakes up with gratitude and works his vegetable garden.
