Throwback to @ajt4k and I getting our minds blown by the new Steadicam Axis from @tiffencompany! Alex called me 24h prior and bullied me into booking a flight to LA because I can’t miss CineGear! I got off the plane the next day and we went straight from the airport to Universal Studios to check out some awesome gear. You can tell by my voice I’m still exhausted from the flight 🤣 But anyways, about the Steadicam Axis - this thing is fucking nuts! I’m someone who’s always welcomed additional weight on the actual camera rig when operating, as for me a heavier camera setup makes the whole sled easier to control, especially with small sleds like my Aero-30 is. But this of course comes at the expense of my poor back 🙃 Meanwhile the Axis allows you to keep your setups light, while still giving you the same kind of control you’d have from a heavier setup. It basically has a Mini-Volt system built into the sled. And this allows it to add artificial inertia, making it feel like you’re operating one of the big rigs without it actually being heavy! The “sticky mode” I talked about in the beginning makes the sled stay wherever you put it. This means if I have to walk up a flight of stairs with the camera tilted up, I no longer have to worry about balancing the sled on my pinky while doing so. The Volt system inside of it just keeps it there and also keeps the horizon perfect! And Horizons is a big one… Keeping the Horizon level is something Steadicam Operators always practice for, no matter how experienced they are. And with the Volt, it makes the job infinitely easier. What I loved about the Axis system is that I could be more focused on the shot and the framing of it, rather than how I’m operating. This by no means eliminates the need to learn how to operate a Steadicam and know how to get usable footage out of it without the Volt. Drone operators might have some competition 🙂 Jokes aside, technology is moving fast — and the line between handheld, drones and CG is getting thinner.
