COAfter a steelpan builder sinks the surface of an oil drum, they carefully chisel a pattern of note panels. These are tuned individually, but have to be blended together to sound in sync. This is tricky since each note activates the overtone series as well as vibrations across the entire pan. This student model tenor pan has just over two octaves of chromatic notes. Chanler Bailey apprenticed under Trinidadian 🇹🇹 master builder Ellie Mannette and continues to maintain my instruments. He uses his ears, checking against the strobe tuner (using the app while traveling) and understands how to work the metal to adjust the dimensions (length, width, and bubble bulge) of each note panel. The silly putty helps control frequencies from sympathetic vibrations. The result is the beautiful Caribbean sound of sunshine!
