Day 19: Stitching Sequence When strategizing how to stitch your needlepoint canvas, it’s helpful to keep a couple things in mind: (1) the tonal range of colors on the canvas and (2) where you’ll be able to anchor your thread. Generally, we recommend stitching the lightest colors first, then the midtones, then the darkest colors. This is for two reasons. First, the threads fuzz a bit as you’re stitching them, and the fuzz of the darker colors can get caught in the lighter colors if you stitch the darker colors first, so if you stitch red first and then stitch white right next to it, the white might appear pink in places that the red fuzz got caught in the white stitches. Second, if you need to jump across the back of the canvas (a top we’ll cover tomorrow!), if you stitch the dark areas first and jump behind lighter areas, the lines of those jumps can create shadows in the lighter areas. Sometimes you can’t stitch lightest to darkest, however, because the lightest colors are in very small areas that don’t provide enough coverage to anchor your thread. A common example is night sky scenes with snow or stars. The individual stitches of the snow or stars don’t provide enough coverage to secure the light thread under those stitches, so you’d need to stitch the night sky first, and then anchor your light thread in the night sky to begin stitching. Day 24: Stitching a Background Usually with needlepoint, we stitch the painted area of the canvas and leave the margin unstitched. Many canvases have a clearly defined edge to the background, such as the light pink in the bow key fob in this video. Sometimes, canvases don’t have a defined background area, such as the crab canvas in this video. In these instances, you get to choose how much of a background you’d like to stitch! This can be handy if you want the canvas to fit into the dimensions of a standard frame or self-finishing item. When deciding on the size of the background area, we recommend leaving an inch or two from the edge unstitched, as this is used by the finishers in the finishing process. Day 9: How to Thread a Needle Needle threaders can seem like extra steps at first, but once you get the hang of using a threader, they can save you time and frustration in the long run! They definitely aren’t required, but can be a helpful tool. And even if you don’t end up using a threader regularly for standard thread types, some speciality fibers (we’re looking at you, sparkles!) fray more easily than others, so using a threader saves you a headache when threading. Do you use a threader regularly or do you use a different method? #NDLPTAcademybyTCS #ndlpt #needlepoint #beginnerneedlepoint #learntoneedlepoint

This snappy stitch is lines and crosses! It’s a great background needlepoint stitch to try on your next project. It’s an open background stitch that will leave a lot of canvas exposed, but the pattern almost looks like wallpaper on your canvas. Made up of cross stitches that angle over two intersections, it alternates with vertical straight stitches over four intersections. Work this stitch in vertical columns. Let us know what you think!

Day 20: Jumping Across the Back When stitching your needlepoint canvas, it’s helpful to minimize how often and how far you “jump” across the back of the canvas. Jumping across the back of the canvas means bringing the thread of one color across the back of the canvas behind an area painted a different color. Each jump will look like a line of thread across the back of the canvas. Minimizing jumps helps keep the bulk of the canvas more even across the whole stitched area, as each jump creates bulk. Each jump also uses extra thread, so it’s more thread efficient to keep jumps to a minimum. Jumping far across the canvas also runs the risk of accidentally buckling the canvas by tensioning too tightly, which is no fun! Finally, although we typically stitch from lightest colors to darkest colors, some canvas designs necessitate stitching a darker color first. When stitching with a darker color first, jumping across an area of a lighter color can cause a shadowing effect, so minimizing jumps is helpful to reduce the chance of creating that shadowing effect. Day 27: Combining Continental & Basketweave Some people find one variation of the tent stitch that’s their favorite, and that’s great! You can absolutely stick with using entirely continental or basketweave across your whole canvas. But if you want to combine both, we have some tips for how we like to incorporate both variations into our canavses! Looking for a fast and easy background stitch? Look no further than Corduroy. This needlepoint stitch is seen here on our carousel mini sock! Corduroy is made up of vertical columns of Satin Stitches angling over two canvas threads, alternating with rows of Tent Stitch. This is one of Jinny’s go to stitches! It’s a two for one, because it can be worked vertically (as seen here) or horizontally, and can even be enlarged so that the wide column becomes even wider. Try it on your next project and tag us! We can’t wait to see what you do!

Day 17: Untangling Your Thread Needlepoint thread often gets twisted on itself as you stitch - this is totally normal! To untwist it, simply hold the canvas aloft, straighten the thread gently, and let go of the needle. It’ll stop spinning once the thread has straightened out! Needlepoint thread also will bunch together on the canvas as you try to stitch through. Don’t pull harder to try to force the thread through the canvas, as this can solidify a knot if there is one. Instead, gently comb through the bunch with your fingers. Usually, the thread is simply bunched together, and not acutally knotted. If there is a true knot, just take your needle off the thread, unpick the knot, rethread, and continue! Day 22: Stretcher Bars Stretcher bars create a wooden frame that’s used to tension a needlepoint canvas while you’re stitching. The increased tension can minimize warping and can make it easier to hold larger projects. They’re entirely optional: some stitchers love them and some stitchers prefer to stitch “in hand,” or without stretcher bars. We’re sharing some tips on how to measure for stretcher bars, assemble them, and tack your canvas to them. Day 21: Getting Out of a Corner Sometimes, certain design elements mean that we end up stitching ourselves into a corner. This is no big deal, and easy to troubleshoot! While there are many ways to get yourself out of a corner, we’re sharing one trick that we find helpful, as it helps maintain even tension across the back of the canvas.
