Even though this was her first photoshoot, she absolutely nailed it. 💪 Despite the language barrier, we were still able to communicate and get great shots. Plus her reaction from start to finish was super cute. Thanks for letting me take your portrait! 🙏 — 📸 Camera Info This session was shot on a Sony A7CII + the new Viltrox 135mm f1.8 LAB lens. I’ve ALWAYS wanted to try nighttime portraits with a 135mm lens. So @viltrox.official sent me their new 135mm f1.8 LAB lens to test it out in Japan. And wowww - I am SO IMPRESSED!! 💪 Even though we were at a busy intersection, I was able to isolate her from the busy background easily. This lens produces beautiful, creamy bokeh (ie. background blur). The images look magical. ✨ But the real kicker is the price. I’ve been testing a few budget lenses recently, and I’ve been super impressed with the kind of quality you can get for the price. This lens is no exception. It will retail for $899 USD (the Sony GM version costs $2100 for comparison), plus they’re offering an extra 15% off for anyone who orders before November 10th. That’s a crazy price for a lens THIS good. Disclaimer: Viltrox sent me this lens for free. No money changed hands, and they didn’t ask me to say anything positive about it. He was rushing to get to work… So we only had TWO minutes. (Technically the entire interaction was 2 minutes and 42 seconds, since I needed to grab his contact details after I took his photo… but the photo taking part was less than 2 minutes lol) I wish we had more time, because he had a really amazing smile that I would’ve loved to photograph. Thanks for letting me take your portrait, Ayame! 🙏 — 👋 Personal Note Sometimes I debate whether or not I should post these shorter interactions since I feel the photos are never really on-par with my longer photoshoots. But, I think it’s important to share the process either way (instead of just sharing the highlight reel). Sometimes you just have to roll with it - and make do with what you have. I LOVED his style 🔥 In Tokyo, many people wear neutral clothing (black, white, grey, etc.) so when I saw Remon walking by wearing a bold blue outfit with blue shades…. I knew I had to ask him. He said he’s never had a photoshoot, but as soon as we started, he starting shifting through poses like a boss. He rocked this photoshoot!! Thanks for letting me take your portrait, Remon! 🙏 — 👋 Personal Notes This interaction was from our very first day. I you notice at the beginning of the video, I have Google Translate loaded on my phone with a message that asks if I can take his photo. However - I’m trying to see how well I can communicate without it. Most communication is non-verbal (ie. body language, tone of voice, facial expressions, etc.), so even though we don’t speak the same language, we both know basic/common words and we’re still able to communicate up to a certain point. Using Google Translate is definitely easier. And I still use it for more advanced phrases (like when I asked if he was a model). But I’m trying to see how far I can get without it. I feel this is helping to improve my communication skills in general. I’ve also learned a few more Japanese phrases and it’s definitely made the interactions easier, so thanks to everyone who messaged me with tips! 🙏 — 🙏 Thank You Shout out to @adorama for helping to make this trip possible. When they heard that @dgphotoholic and I wanted to bring our projects to Japan, they wanted to help support it in whatever ways they could.
