sundiata is a statement of independence. it's the first time in 10 years that i've owned my music. the process of being an artist, cutting yourself open on display for the world is such a vulnerable position, & at times as painful as it is rewarding.
like many of u, i've dealt with depression and mental health issues my whole life, before adding in structural inequity and all the trappings of the music industry. but ur support gives me the fire to keep going.
i made this project as something for just US to share. it's not on streaming, it's an experience thats only for the people who support me the most. theres exclusive video of the process and convos with my collaborators that are only on sundiata.vicmensa.com
i partenered with @even.biz a platform that lets u buy the art directly from the artist. to know that ur money is actually feeding real people.
in a way, i guess i'm getting back to the grassroots way that we started, way back in high school with kids these days, passing out flyers and selling mixtapes in the hallway.
i won't lie, doing this without a label and very little team has been incredibly difficult, but honestly so rewarding. i just feel like im honoring my voice, like, im putting everything i got into this shit. working 20 hour days on the regular. i'm editing these videos, doing dm campaigns & email blasts 😂
but i do it because i love it. to me, music isn't just a money grab. oftentimes i spend more than i make just because i want to make it dope as fuck for yall. i want you to see and hear this shit and really be changed by it.
