FRWe all have our fears, and sometimes when you share them, you realise you’re not alone.
I’ll go first…so injuring myself again scares me, so I avoid bigger or close-out waves.
Those conditions make me super nervous. It’s something I’ve had to work on over the years, and I’m slowly building my confidence back up…

LOStrength and power is helpful, but wasted without good technique and timing when it comes to catching waves.
If you’re missing waves, try these five things:
1. Choose the right board
Before anything technical, remember, if the waves are small and weak, a bigger board is your friend. More board means more buoyancy, and more buoyancy means easier speed generation.
2. Start paddling earlier
The ocean is unpredictable, so control things where you can. Pick your waves early and commit to them. Calm and intentional paddling beats the late panic sprint every time.
3. Position correctly on your board
If paddling feels slow, you’re likely too far back and dragging the tail. Slide forward until the board glides flat. Each stroke will become easier and generate speed with less effort.
4. Time your paddle
Paddling early is good, but if the wave isn’t steep enough when it reaches you, catching it is difficult. When timed right, the wave’s energy can do most of the work for you.
5. Just keep surfing!
Rome wasn’t built in a day, and perfect paddling won’t be either! Keep having fun, use the tips above, and trial and error will take care of the rest.

EVDang I’m embarrassed this is getting a lot of views! I was totally just copying a trend.
I’m certainly not the most eco friendly shaper or person out there. I still ride foam half the time and love them. I understand surfing is where it is today because of foam.
I am however very glad with my decision not to shape foam anymore. The pile of plastic, cups, tape, and foam dust was depressing and hard to ignore. Sawdust in the green trash can I don’t feel bad about.
