A cache of information allegedly obtained by hackers, known as the Xinjiang Police Files, has shed light on China’s brutal repression of Uyghurs in the western Chinese region. The database reveals the names and faces of 2,884 members of Uyghurs detained by Chinese authorities in the Konasheher county of Kashgar in 2018. Washington has designated the crackdown on the largely Muslim ethnic minority as a genocide. Many of the Uyghurs were arrested on dubious charges, such as listening to illegal lectures, advocating terrorism, or simply being related to other people that have been detained. Some were flagged by a surveillance system designed to monitor their movements and habits. Some Uyghurs in exile identified their missing family members in the files. Several individuals have shown up to their storage units at Extra Space Storage in Northwest Atlanta to find their units ransacked and many of their belongings missing. Atlanta Police said officers responded to the facility on Bishop Street recently for several burglaries. The break-ins happened towards the end of April and the first week of May. Police have released pictures and video taken from the surveillance system inside the building. One of their victims, Adam Horne, reached out to 11Alive looking for help in possibly getting some of his things back including thousands of dollars in DJ equipment and his collection of Jordan tennis shoes. The President of Palantir Canada sits on Carneys board of Canada-US relations and the advisory council of Canadian Global Affairs Institute (a direct liaison between government and military/defence). And – the founder of Palantir, Peter Thiel – was Facebook's very first investor back when it was just a "three-person dormroom" project, making a $500,000 angel investment in the company to get it off the ground and move it to Silicon Valley. The connection between data collection, surveillance technology and AI cannot be ignored. And neither can the fact that the U.S. is supplying enormous amounts of the money, tech and weapons that makes testing it all on innocent human beings, possible.
