THEscaping poverty has become increasingly difficult, not only because incomes remain low, but because the economic and social systems that once supported upward mobility are steadily weakening. Recent analyses suggest millions would need to more than double their income simply to rise above the poverty line.
Global progress in reducing extreme poverty has slowed dramatically over the past decade. Overlapping challenges, weak economic growth, conflict, rising debt, and climate shocks, have stalled gains. By 2025, an estimated 831 million people were still living on less than $3 per day.
Economists call this a “poverty trap”, a cycle of structural barriers like limited education, unstable employment, and lack of healthcare that keeps people stuck even when they work hard.
In wealthier nations, the problem takes a different form. Wage growth has stagnated while living costs rise, and safety nets have failed to keep pace. In the U.S., full-time work at minimum wage still falls below basic poverty thresholds, earning a wage no longer guarantees security.
The result is stark: escaping poverty often requires doubling one’s income or overcoming systemic barriers far beyond personal control.

ANIt’s tragic to hear about the passing of a remarkable professional who was #abused in the workplace.
She left a #suicide note blaming #workplacebullying that the university failed to address. Like most companies, her concerns were not taken seriously.
We must do better. Her story, my story, and the similar stories of thousands of people, especially #blackwomen, is why I will NEVER be silent about #workplacetrauma. It’s insidious, intentional, and unconscionable.
When your days are over on this earth, will you leave knowing that you were in the corner where courage forces you to speak up, advocate for victims, and demand change OR - are you an ally of the bully, #systemic racism, #discrimination of all forms all in an effort to collect your 💰? Choose wisely and carefully because it’s likely not a matter of “if” it happens but “when” it happens to you, and I pray laws are in place to protect you. Until a vocally collective body demands change, your silence is complicit in maintaining the status quo.
