When you first start on your diabetes journey, regardless of the type of diabetes you have, most dietitians are going to say 30-60 g of carbohydrate per meal. This is because we want to see how your body tolerates certain foods and carb amounts. As you progress in your journey, and you learn how your body responds to certain carb amounts and foods, this will obviously change. It also changes, depending on the medications that are used to manage your diabetes. If you are only managing your diabetes through lifestyle factors, you may be more limited in the amount of carbohydrates recommended at each meal… But if you have type 1 or insulin independent type 2, you may have more flexibility in the amount of carbohydrate you consume at each meal because you can adjust your medication based on what you’re choosing to eat. These foods are rich in one or more of the following: Fat Fiber Protein Our bodies can digest carbohydrates the quickest out of all of the macro nutrients. So by pairing carbohydrates with sources of fat, fiber, and/or protein, we can slow down that digestion process and increase the likelihood that we will have stable blood sugars after eating.
