STMOBILISATION OF THE TIBIOTALAR JOINT HVLA

Regarding my previous post about myofascial treatment of the „INVERSION TRAUMA“, it is very important to mobilise the tibiotalar joint (TTJ) if it is restricted.

Before you perform this kind of technique, you should make sure to have released all myofascial structures which can cause a TTJ restriction with a specific myofascial release treatment (check my previous post).

Usually, if you do a proper myofascial treatment, the TTJ won’t cause a problem any more, but sometimes it still can. If so, it requires a high velocity low amplitude (HVLA) thrust technique, otherwise there is a high chance to suffer from an ankle dorsiflexion range of motion (DF ROM) deficit which can be reduced significantly through this kind of manipulation! Additionally it can force knee problems or even hip or lower back problems through a so-called ascending kinetic chain.

But watch out ⚠️: Never do this manipulation in the acute phase of an inversion trauma as it can lead to an internal bleeding and edema. To be on the safe side you can apply the HVLA thrust technique 2-3 days after the injury has happened, unless you are very experienced with it.

The TTJ involves the talus moving in the ankle mortise, the major motions of this joint are dorsiflexion and plantarflexion. Dorsiflexion is more functional, more stable because the talus is wider anteriorly and fits securely into the ankle mortise. Reduction in dorsiflexion usually indicates that the tibia is anterior on the talus.

The talus usually is restricted anteriorly, superiorly with medial rotation. To reduce the talus restriction your contact will be on the anterior medial neck of the talus, the elbows will be parallel to each other, the therapist stands in a stable position and applies an HVLA thrust technique.

A restriction in this joint can lead to knee or lower back problems through a so-called ascending kinematic chain, if you don´t work on it properly!

Todd Terje and the Mystery Behind TTJ Edits
Todd Terje, aka Terje Olsen, is one of the most beloved, influential producers of the last two decades. And speaking personally, if I were to make a Fantano-style tiered list, Todd’s in the S Tier. Herbie’s up there too. Hiroshi Yoshimura too.
I’m getting off track.
In 2014, he released It’s Album Time, the Greatest Album Of All Time, and then since then, there’s been a handful of remixes that have come out, a single that features two remixes but doesn’t feature the original song, which is an incredible move. And I feel like the general vibe I get from people is like, “When’s the next album gonna drop?”
Now, would a new Todd Terje record be great, yes. BUT, did you know that he’s been releasing edits this whole time??
If you don’t know, an edit is a track that gets reworked by a DJ, usually to make it easier to play in a set. Now, I knew that there were some amazing Terje Edits out there, but I had no idea that there were being pressed to vinyl.
I learned about TTJ Edits, which is the name they’re categorized under back in 2021, when I was perusing the dance 12” section of Amoeba in Hollywood. I found something that was labeled “TTJ Edits”. Because of the legal implications, these edit labels tend to keep things low-key. Very little text on the label, the origins behind the disc are usually pretty obscured.
I do have some questions though: are these all actually him? Did he sanction these releases? The general impression I get is that these are just bootlegs of his edits, but I don’t know.
If you’re desperate for some deep Terje, do a little digging around for some of these edits. I’d highly suggest searching out the Remaster Of The Universe compilation, which is a proper compilation of his remixes, that came out on Permanent Vacation. And, for good measure, go watch the FULL recording of the playing at Oya Festival back in 2014.
