This kind of strength through the core and the entire spine takes years to build through Contrology, Joseph Pilates’ original system of exercises. Every movement from the very first beginner exercises has a purpose: to develop strength, flexibility, and true health. Along the way the body experiences lymphatic cleansing, nerve stretching, organ stimulation, and improved alignment. To perform movements like this comfortably at any age (I’m 57 here) requires commitment to the original method. Not squats. Not weight lifting on a version of a Reformer. These movements come from practice. From repetition. From going inward. No mirrors. No music. Just the work of building strength, awareness, and connection to the body. The variety of this sequence is fun, and also reveals imbalances that you may not have been fully aware of, but that’s not where the value of the exercise ends. Classical Pilates Strength & Flexibility on Spine Corrector The Spine Corrector can support and develop your spinal extension at the same time, related to what you want and need. In this video, I’m using the Spine Corrector in several ways with a weighted bar. This particular bar is the heavier one that I have in the studio (not exactly sure what the weight is), and I like to keep a wide variety of bars around so that I have options, depending on the exercise, apparatus, and needs of the individual. In each instance I take the spinal extension further, which is encouraged by my position on the barrel and the weight of the bar into gravity. This type of practice can help advance your work across the studio for sure. But other than that, it simply feels amazing on its own in the moment. I love to work through the progression after a long day of teaching, or really just any time at all. Coming Up! The last Spine Corrector class for a while is going to take place this Monday. Classical Pilates Side Kicks with the Foot Strap While I was in the process of fully restoring this original, vintage Benchmat from Carola Trier’s studio, I was really excited to feel how the ankle strap assisted the work. This ankle strap off the edge of the mat was one of Joe Pilates’ design elements for both the Benchmat and the Cadillac, and I had the original straps remade so that I could use them for exercises like this! Like all pilates apparatus, the details like this from the original mat inform the unassisted matwork. These straps provide resistance and assistance from the ankle strap. I’ve become better at understanding the matwork without the strap, because my body and mind remember the sensation of the strap when I don’t have it on. Coming Up! Classical Pilates Short Box on the Ladder Barrel I just love practicing and teaching the Short Box series on the Ladder Barrel. It’s so incredibly informative for the same series on the reformer. It really enhances your understanding of how to move through a greater range of motion. This particular barrel is an original from Joseph Pilates’ New York City studio, and the one he used there from about 1960 onward. It’s a different design than the previous Ladder Barrel he had in the studio for decades before that. I believe the padding was updated at some point since then, and I would personally prefer a little less padding. But I’m not about to make any changes to it anytime soon. Maybe someday! Coming Up!
