3I/ATLAS, also known as C/2025 N1 (ATLAS) and previously as A11pl3Z, is an interstellar comet discovered by the Asteroid Terrestrial-impact Last Alert System (ATLAS) station. The comet follows an unbound, hyperbolic trajectory past the Sun. It will not come closer than 1.8 AU (almost twice the distance of the Sun) from Earth, so it poses no threat.It is the third interstellar object confirmed passing through the Solar System, afterOumuamua and 2I/Borisov,hence the prefix. It is not expected to brighten enough to become visible in binoculars or to the naked eye. During solar conjunction on 21 October 2025,[f] the comet could be observed by the GOES-19 weather satellite. It was quickly classified as an interstellar object because its hyperbolic trajectory indicated that it is not gravitationally bound to our Solar System. The "length" of 3I/ATLAS isn't a single, simple measurement, but its nucleus is estimated to be between 440 meters (about 1,444 feet) and 5.6 kilometers (about 3.5 miles) in diameter. Some sources suggest it is larger than previous interstellar objects like 'Oumuamua and Borisov. Diameter: Estimates for the diameter of the nucleus range from 440 meters to 5.6 kilometers. Size comparison: It is considered significantly larger than 'Oumuamua (about 100 meters) and 2I/Borisov (about a kilometer across). Mass: Its mass is estimated to be at least 33 billion tons, based on its motion under outgassing forces, which was smaller than expected for its size. Well, in short, the planet would be doomed, but let’s dig a little deeper and explain exactly what would take place. ⠀⠀ First of all, there are three properties of a black hole that, in principle, can be measured: mass, spin (angular momentum), and overall electric charge. These are the only three things an outside observer could ever know about a black hole since all other information is relatively lost — meaning no matter how complex an object is that gets pulled into the black hole, all that will be left of it is its mass, charge, and spin. ⠀⠀ Now, of these parameters, mass is the most important, because the mass of the black hole — and the gravitational force it generates — is what causes the downfall of nearby objects. ⠀⠀ If you get too close to a black hole, you will begin to stretch out like spaghetti — an effect known as spaghettification — thanks to a gravitational gradient across your body. Imagine you are headed feet first toward a black hole; since your feet are physically closer, they will feel a stronger gravitational pull than your head. ⠀⠀ So, what does this mean for Earth? ⠀⠀ The same gravitational effect that produced spaghettification on your body would start to take effect on the planet. Astronomers have categorized this object as interstellar because of the hyperbolic shape of its orbital path. (It does not follow a closed orbital path about the Sun.) When the orbit of 31/ATLAS is traced into the past, the comet clearly originates from outside our solar system. Comet 31/ATLAS poses no threat to Earth and will remain far away. The closest it will approach our planet is about 1.8 astronomical units (about 170 million miles, or 270 million kilometers). 31/ATLAS will reach its closest point to the Sun around Oct. 30, 2025, at a distance of about 1.4 au (130 million miles, or 210 million kilometers) - just inside the orbit of Mars. The interstellar comet's size and physical properties are being investigated by astronomers around the world. 31/ATLAS should remain visible to ground-based telescopes through September 2025, after which it will pass too close to the Sun to observe.
