A lo largo de la película, la iluminación juega un papel clave en cómo percibimos a los personajes. En varias escenas se puede ver un pequeño reflejo de luz en los ojos de algunos personajes, algo que los hace sentir más humanos y vivos. Pero otros aparecen con los ojos más oscuros o casi sin reflejo, lo que los hace parecer extraños. Muchos fans creen que esto fue una técnica usada por el director John Carpenter para insinuar de forma muy sutil quién podría estar infectado. Nunca se confirma directamente en la película, pero encaja perfectamente con el tema central de la historia: la desconfianza.
