I discovered this hike while researching alternatives to The Wave, and the first time, I knew it was more than we could safely navigate alone.
We hired @dreamlandsafari and I can’t recommend them enough.
When we returned on our own, we still relied heavily on GPS to stay on route. Do not take this hike lightly.
🥾 9–11 miles round trip
↗️ ~1,100 ft elevation gain
🧭 Requires solid route-finding skills over slickrock and deep sand
🅿️ Wire Pass Trailhead
💵 $6 per person (dogs included) via Recreation.gov
🐕 Dogs permitted
⚠️ Leave No Trace is critical here:
• Stay off cryptobiotic soil
• Don’t carve or mark the rock
• Pack out all trash — including 💩 & 🧻
This is one of those hikes that rewards preparation, patience, and respect for the landscape.

Welcome to The Wave (Arizona-Utah border)📍
This hike can be almost impossible to land a permit to… but we’ve got you covered 🌊
With only 64 permits granted each day and so many people applying… This makes The Wave the most exclusive hike IN THE WORLD 🌎
48 permits are drawn each day in an online Advanced Lottery (4 months in advance). Only 16 permits are given out each day for the Daily Lottery (2 days prior) 🎟️
There’s a lot of tips out there that focus on things like trying to go in the off season or trying to apply on bad weather days with the idea that there will be less people entering the lottery. You can add that strategy on to this one ⛈️
The most important thing to remember is… More entries means an increased chance of winning. So here’s what to do to GREATLY increase your chances…
When entering the lottery you can list up to 6 people on your potential permit. Each time we applied we BOTH would apply (separate email address). We also had groups of friends that we would apply with at times. Everyone would apply using their own email but we would all select enough spots so that if someone won we could all go on that 1 permit 👩🏽🤝👨🏼👩🏽🤝👨🏼👩🏽🤝👨🏼
In order to apply via the Daily Lottery you have to physically be within a certain geofenced area in Northern Arizona/Southern Utah… which includes towns like… Kanab, Page, Big Water, Fredonia, Glendale, and Jacob Lake 🍀
There’s honestly so much to do in this area that it’s easy to spend a good amount of time in both Page Arizona & Kanab Utah. So every time we were in the area we made sure we entered the Daily Lottery along with any friends that were there as well 🤞🏼
With this strategy we were able to get in a little over 50 entries (chances) in a relatively short amount of time 😲
