A little toddler, not even 2 years old yet. She’s exhausted after a long morning of play and learning. On top of that, three teeth are cutting through at once. She’s done. She just stops walking and stands still.
My husband and I respect her feelings. We offer options — do you want a hug? Your stroller? A snack?
She says «no».
She just needs a moment to stand and breathe.
Alright. No problem. We stand with her…
And then a woman walks up. A complete stranger. She reaches out her hands toward our child and says she’s going to take her. 🚩🚩🚩
Says they don’t have any girls in their family, and this one would be perfect. 😏
Sofi gets scared.
I kneel down, hug her gently and say:
“No one is taking you. Mama will NEVER let anyone take you.”
And I can’t help but wonder:
Why are these scare tactics still a thing?
Why do grown adults think it’s okay to mess with little kids like that?
Children are people.
They deserve the same respect we expect as adults.
Imagine you’re exhausted and upset, and a stranger comes up and says they’ll take you away if you don’t smile.
Sounds ridiculous, right?
We’re raising our daughter with respect.
No threats. No manipulation. No punishments.
She’s not less of a person because she’s small — she’s just learning. She’s figuring out her emotions, her place in the world.
But fear? That’s not how we teach.
Kids deserve respect. Let’s finally get that.
